Crochet Pumpkin Turns Into a Pumpkin Pie

I'm a grandmother of 6 and enjoy making holiday themed items for my grandchildren. One year I made a totally cool crocheted pumpkin that came apart like a puzzle (you may of seen it on Pinterest) and gave it to my grandson. I thought he would love it and he did, but then he said to me "Grammy, I think a pumpkin that turns into a pumpkin pie would be fun". I thought-where does my grandson come up with these ideas? So, challenge accepted.

This little pumpkin (about the size of a tennis ball) turns from pumpkin from the garden into a pie from the oven and back again. I consider this an advance beginner pattern and uses very little yarn, basically just scrapes except for the pumpkin which uses the most (less than an ounce).

I hope you enjoy this as much as my grandchildren and the many friends I have given them to have.

Pumpkin: Orange

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WEAVING IN YARN ENDS-just pull ends to the inside of the pumpkin and cut to shorten length. All ends will be hidden between the two projects and will not be seen.

Chain 14

Row 1: Start in the second chain from hook-3 sc, 7 dc, 3 sc down chain. Ch 1 and turn (13)

Row 2: 1 sc, BLO sc in the next 2 sts, BLO dc in the next 7 sts, BLO sc in the next 2 sts, sc in both loops in the last st. DO NOT CH 1, turn (13)

Row 3: 1 sc, BLO sc in the next 2 sts, BLO dc in the next 7, BLO sc in the next 2 sts, sc in both loops in the last st. CHAIN 1, turn. (13)

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have a total of 20 rows.

*Basically you are chaining 1 at the end of every other row to make one end opening larger.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail to use to sew first and last rows together.

Sew seam now leaving ends open.

Gather and close the end of the pumpkin without the Ch1 turn (smallest opening). Turn (like a sock) to the right side of the pumpkin. Set aside.

Stem: Dark brown

Chain 5 and sl st in the second chain from hook and down chain (4 sts).

Attach to top of the pumpkin (gathered end).

Leaves: Green

Chain 7, sl st in the second chain from hook, working down the chain, 1 hdc, dc in the next 3, hdc in last st. (6) Chain 7 and repeat the above until you have made 5 leaves.

Leave a long tail to sew onto pumpkin.

Join the first leaf and last leaf and gather the leaves to a small circle around the stem and sew onto top of pumpkin.

You can tack the leaf tips down with short pieces of yarn at this point (use a separate piece of yarn for each leaf so that it does not stop the stretch of the pumpkin).

Pumpkin is now done :)

I adapted this from a pumpkin pie brooch I found on the Lion Brand Yarn website: https://www.lionbrand.com/products/crochet-pattern...

I want to give credit to this site. Pie tin and plate are all my creation.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WEAVING IN YARN ENDS (except for the Pie Plate)-just pull ends to the inside of the pumpkin and cut to shorten length. All ends will be hidden between the two projects.

Pie Top: Burnt orange
You will be working in the round on this piece.

Rnd 1: MR 6 sc. Place marker in first sc for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.

Rnd 2: *2 sc in each st, repeat around (12 sc)

Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc in next st, repeat from * around (18 sc)

Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc in next st; repeat from * around (24 sc)

Rnd 5: *3 sc, inc the next st; repeat from * around (30 sc)

Rnd 6: *4 sc, inc in next st; repeat from * around (36 sc) Fasten off burnt orange

Crust: Tan

WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY with right side of pie top facing you:

Join with BLO sl st the tan (crust color) in any sc of pie top,

Rnd 1: In BLO 2 hdc in same beginning st, BLO sl st in the next sc, *BLO sc, [BLO 2 hdc, BLO sl st] in the next st; repeat from * around and fasten off.

Whipped cream: White

Chain 13

Rnd 1: Work 2 sc in second chain from hook, 2 sc in next 3 chains, 2 hdc in next 4 ch, 2 dc in the last 4 ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto the pie top.

Curl “whipped cream” (with the sc sts in the center) and sew together and sew onto top of Pie. Be sure to attach securely.

Pie Tin: Tan & Gray/Silver

Start with tan and leaving a long tail for sewing to top of “Pie Top” Chain 36 and join ends with the gray/silver. Be careful not to twist chain

Rnd 1: Working in the round, sc around. place marker at the end of each row (36)

Rnd 2: *3 sc, DEC 1, repeat from *around ending with 1 sc (29)

Rnd 3: *3 sc, DEC 1, repeat from *around ending with 4 sc (24)

Rnd 4: *3 sc, DEC 1, repeat from *around ending with 4 sc (20)

Rnd 5: Work even in sc. End with sl st, finish off

Pie Plate: Any color of your choice

WORKING IN FRONT LOOP ONLY with right side of pie tin facing you

Rnd 1: Join with sl st in any sc in rnd 5 of “pie tin” (be sure the right side of pie tin is facing you) chain 3, dc in the same sl st, work 2 dc in each sc around. Join the beginning chain. (40)

Rnd 2: Chain 1 *Sc, [sc ch 3 sl st in same st] repeat from *around. Finish off and weave ends.

ATTACH PIE TIN AND PIE TOP sewing under the “crust/tan yarn” of pie top using the long tail from the pie tin. Only sew to “the crust of pie” and the tan row of “pie tin” to hide the joining stitching.

Pumpkin Pie is now done :)

Turn pie inside out and stuff into pumpkin (you should be able to see the whip cream inside pumpkin)

Using a long orange piece of yarn, whip stitch the pie tin (silver/gray yarn) and pumpkin together using only the unworked stitch of the pie tin (under the pie plate) and pumpkin edge.

IMPORTANT: After doing a couple of whip stitches, stretch the pumpkin opening so that you do not sew too tightly-this will make the turning of the pumpkin/pie easier.

*To change from pumpkin to pumpkin pie turn (like you turn a sock inside/right side out). When changing from pie back to pumpkin be sure to tuck the “pie plate” inside of pumpkin too.

Have fun.

This may seem like a lot of steps but it is really a very quick project using very little yarn.
