Plantable and harvestable veggies in a windowsill worthy box. Fun and cute! Just don't try to eat them ;-)

I hope you have as much fun making this as I did creating it!

Supplies

BIG TWIST COTTON YARN is what is used in this instructable and what is listed below. However, feel free to use your favorite yarn, scale is not necessary in this project, so feel free to make it your own!

2 skeins of Sahara Splash

1 skein of Granite Splash

1 skein of Coral Splash (though Tangerine Splash would be far better, I just didn't have any on hand)

1 skein of Violet Splash

1 skein of Sage

CROCHET HOOK If you tend to crochet loosely, choose a hook at least 1 size smaller than listed on your yarn. You want your stitches nice and tight for this project. I used a size G/4.25mm with my medium weight 4 yarn.

Continue on with color B. If you prefer, you may join in color B as you wish, but you may have a slight jog in color.

This step uses only the color Sahara Splash

25 foundation row sc, Turn (Alternatively, you can ch 26, and sc in 2nd ch from hook and across).

Rows 2-16 - DO NOT CHAIN, sc in each st across. ( 25 st)

By leaving out the ch at the beginning of each row, we get a cleaner, straighter edge.

Rows 17 to 20 - turn, ch 2, dc across. (25 st)

Rows 21 to 36 - turn DO NOT CHAIN, sc across (25 st)

Do not fasten off

Evenly space 16 sl st down the side of your rectangle working into the sides of the rows 36 down to row 21.

Work 8 even SC into the side of your 4 DC rows. Turn. SC back across 8 st. Turn. Repeat for 16 total rows of 8 sc. We’re now building the ends of our planter box.

Sl st across the top of your 16 rows of 8. We’re going to Sl st around our box to the other side to build our other end.

To do so, work 16 Sl st evenly down the side our our 16 rows of 8. Another 16 even Sl st up the long side of our box and 25 sl st across. 16 even sl st down the other side until we get to the other end of our DC rows. 8 evenly spaced sc across the side of the DC rows. Repeat the same process as our other side (16 rows of 8 sc). Sl st across the top once more and 8 even sl st down the side. 16 sl st up the long side and fasten off.

It is important to sl st around our box. The Sl st around gives us anchor points for sewing up our ends. Which gives our planter box more stability. I know it’s tempting to skip this step and just join in your yarn at the sides but I promise, the sl st is necessary.

Place the sides together as seen in the photos and stitch them together using our sl st sides. One side of each side panel will not have a sl st. Just stitch them up evenly spacing alongside your sl st row on the other side. See photos for a better reference as to where you should stitch for stability. Repeat on all 4 corners. Weave in ends. Add a slight bit of fiber fill to the bottom. Not much, just enough to make your veggies stay in place.

Just Add "Dirt"!
