Crochet Mushroom Hat for Cats
Over the weekend I crochet a very cute Cottage-core inspired Mushroom Hat for my cat Puss.
In this Instructable I will show you the steps I went through to craft it.
This hat is completely customizable and the pattern is a convenient guide, as every cat is different.
This is a quick make and depending on how fast you can crochet can be worked up in an hour or two.
Supplies
You will Need:
- Crochet hook (I used a 4mm hook)
- Red yarn
- Beige Yarn
- White yarn
- Tapestry needle
Creating the Top Section
A basic Rectangle section in red is required as the top of the hat.
As every cat is different, don't stress too much about the number of stitches required. Hold you rectangle up to you cat's head periodically to see how well it fits sitting on their head between their ears.
My rectangle ended up being roughly 5cm by 7cm, and I used alternating rows of single crochet stitches and double crochet stitches.
Row 1: Chain 10
Row 2: Double crochet into each stitch
Row 3 Onwards: Alternate rows of Single Crochets until the rectangle is roughly 7cm long.
End with a row of Single crochets.
The next part of the Top section is to create the ear loops
Chain 16 (Note: the larger the cat the more stitches you might need)
Join the chain of stitches into the bottom corner or the rectangle.
Complete a row of Single Crochets until you reach the next corner
Chain 16 stitches again and slip stitch into the next corner.
Cut the yarn and weave in any ends with the tapestry needle.
Head Band and Ties
Once the red yarn has been finished it is time to add in the Beige head band and Ties. The beige colour is to represent the stump of a mushroom.
Row 1: Stitch a row of Double Crochets around the entire circumference of the hat.
Row 2: Start stitching a row of Single Crochets until you reach the centre of the first ear Loop.
Chain 30
A larger cat may require a longer tie, so continue the chain for however long you require the tie to be.
Single crochet back into each chain of the tie.
Once you reach to rim of the head band again continue to Single Crochet around the band until you reach the to other side of the hat, and the centre of the second ear loop.
Chain 30, and the Single Crochet back into each chain of the tie.
when you reach the band again continue to Single Crochet until you reach the starting point.
For a thicker band add another row of single crochets. You can skip the ties, or include them in this additional round, depending on our wide you would like the ties to be.
Mushroom Spots and Assembly
Crochet 3 small circles using the white yarn.
Big Spot x1
Start with a Magic Ring
Row 1: Stitch 6 Single Crochets into the Magic Ring and pull the ring tight
Row 2: Insert 2 Single Crochets into each stitch of the previous row.
Slip stitch to end and cut a 15cm tail.
Small Spot x2
Start with a Magic Ring
Row 1: Stitch 10 Single Crochets into the Magic Ring and pull the ring tight.
Slip stitch to end and cut a 15cm tail.
Using the tapestry needle and the tail left on each of the spots stitch the spots onto the red section of the hat.
You can add more spots or leave them of entirely.
You can also continue adding rows onto the spots to make them as big as you like.
Add Any Extra Embellishments
At this stage I tried the hat on my cat and decided it needed a little extra oomph.
Using the Red Yarn again I added 3 or 4 Triple Crochets onto each stitch around the brim, onto the border where the red yarn meets the beige yarn.
The next row was a line of decrease stitches, joining two of the Triple Crochets together.
The Triple Crochets gave the rim of red a ribbed texture that kind of resembles the underside of a mushroom as the decrease stitches in the next row held the stitches tightly together.
Enjoy!
Present your cute hat to you cat and hope that they will tolerate it long enough for you to get a few good photos.
As you can see Puss was not very happy in the beginning, but quickly forgot about the hat, allowing me to take a few very cute photos.
