Crochet Granny Square Hat

Granny squares are commonly used to make blankets. But they are a versatile base for various crochet projects, such as scarves, cardigans, bags, shawls, and in fact any fabric project that can be broken down to squares. That includes hats as well.

I was inspired to make this hat when I saw a crochet motif headband. I thought, if the band itself looked so fashionable, a hat atop it would only make it better. I think I was right...

Needles:

• 4mm crochet hook
• 3.5mm crochet hook
• tapestry needle

I used medium-weight yarn
Brim

• colour A - Cream
• colour B - Grey
• colour C - Orange

Hat

• colour C - Orange
• colour D - Hazel
• colour E - Dark Orange
• colour F - Maroon

Pompom

• colour B - Grey

The following stitches refer to US terms.

ch - chain

ss - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

bpsc - back post single crochet

hdc - half double crochet

bphdc - back post half double crochet

dc - double crochet

dc inc - 2dc in same stitch

blo - back loop only

Special Stich

In this pattern, I have used the 'seed stitch' which is created by alternating DCs and SCs.

The brim of this hat is made up of 8 granny squares which are then sewn together. And I have added a narrow additional brim at the bottom to give the hat a snug fitting.

Note: Use 3.5mm hook for the brim.

Square 1

Round 1: (Colour A) ch 2 on magic loop, 12 dc around, ss to 1st dc, fasten off. (12)

Round 2: (Colour C) work a standing dc in any stitch of Round 1, dc in same stitch, dc inc around, ss to 1st dc. (24)

Round 3: ch 2, hdc, sc, hdc, dc, 2dc ch2 2dc, [dc,hdc,sc,hdc,dc, 2dc ch2 2dc] around, ss in 1st hdc, fasten off. (36, 4 ch2 spaces)

Round 4: (Colour B) work a standing sc in any round 3 stitch, sc around, sc2 ch1 sc2 in ch2 spaces, fasten off. (52, 4 ch1 spaces)

Make 4 Square 1 in total.

Square 2

Round 1: (Colour C) Same as Square 1.

Round 2: (Colour A) Same as Square 1.

Round 3: Same as Square 1.

Round 4: (Colour B) Same as Square 1.

Make 4 Square 2 in total.

Assembling

Sew together Squares 1 and 2 alternately like in the picture to form a band, weave in the ends. It should measure roughly 22" around.

Auxiliary Brim

Here is the pattern for the additional brim. If you have any doubts you can refer to the video tutorial.

Usually a ribbed crochet brim is made by crocheting a row of sc or hdc into the back loops of the previous row, adding an extra chain, then turning the work and repeating the process, until one works enough rows to make a band. Then the hat is crocheted using this band as a base. But in this case we will be adding the brim to an already formed band, using a slightly modified version to the ribbed crochet brim. This pattern comes handy in projects in which one wants to add the brim afterwards, such as in top down hats.

Note: Each ss anchors will be 2 stitches apart.

Row 1: (Colour B) work an ss on any stitch at the bottom of the band, ch4, turn.

Row 2: sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc 2, ss into 3rd stitch from the 1st ss anchor on the band, turn. (3)

Row 3: Working in blo, sc 3, ch1, turn. (3)

Row 4: Working in blo, sc in 2nd stich from hook, sc2, ss into the 3rd stitch from the previous anchor. (3)

Row 5-86: Repeat Rows 3 and 4.

Sew the seam, weave in ends.

The hat is worked above the granny square band, not the side on which the auxiliary brim was added.

Note: Use 4mm hook for the hat.

Round 1: (Colour B) Work a standing hdc into any stitch of round 4 of the granny square band, hdc in the same stitch, hdc around, ss to 1st hdc. (86)

Round 2: ch 2, bpsc around, ss to 1st sc.

Round 3: ch 2, bphdc around, ss to 1st hdc, fasten off.

Round 4: (Colour C) ch 2, dc in same stitch, [sc, dc] around, ss to 1st dc. (by alternating sc and dc we create the seed stitch)

Round 5: ch 2, [sc with Colour D, dc with Colour C] around, ss to sc. (make sure that the sc and dc of Round 5 is stitched in the dc and sc loop of Round 4 respectively.

Rounds 6 and 8: Repeat Round 4

Rounds 7 and 9: Repeat Round 5

Round 10-15: Repeat Round 4-9, and swap Colour D with Colour E.

Round 16-21: Repeat Round 4-9, and swap Colour D with Colour F.

Round 22-28: Repeat Round 4, fasten off.

The height of the hat should be approximately 10".

Sew and close the top of the hat. Weave in the ends

I feel a pompom always adds a joyous cheer to my hats.

Make a pompom by hand or a pompom maker, to the size of your choice. I made a 3" sized pompom by hand.

Once it is made, sew it to the top of the hat. You can refer to the video for making the pompom. And there you go! Your hat is ready!
