Stitches/Terminology Used

All stitches are in US terminology.

Single crochet (sc), increase (inc), decrease (dec), slip stitch (sl st), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), magic circle, front loops only.

· To increase: stitch 2 sc into the same stitch

· To decrease: insert hook into first stitch, yarn over and draw through the loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and draw through the loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.

· To slip stitch: insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw through loop (2 loops on hook), draw the newly made loop through the first loop

· To half double crochet: yarn over (2 loops on hook), insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw through the loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.

· To double crochet: yarn over (2 loops on hook), insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw through the loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through the remaining 2 loops.

· To crochet in front or back loops only: when you crochet, you make little “v” stitches when looking directly down at your work. Your front loops are the first part of the “v” that’s closest to you. (Your back loops are the part of the “v” that’s furthest away from you.) When inserting your hook into the stitch, only insert it through the first part the “v.”

To Make a Magic Circle

1. Curl the end of your yarn to make a small “b” (with the tail pointing upward and lying on top).

2. Insert hook and snag long end of yarn through. I recommend anchoring your “b” shape with your other hand.

3. Yarn over and draw through the loop. This makes your “magic circle.” Feel free to pull the “tail” out of the circle.

4. Crochet into your circle as if it were a stitch. Once you reach your desired number of stitches, slip stitch into your first stitch.

Wings

Make 2.

Using Color B for the chick, chain 5. Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, sc, hdc, dc, hdc.

Cut yarn and pull through the loop, leaving a tail to sew onto the chick.

Beak

Using Color C for the beak, chain 3. Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc, then dc into the last chain.

Cut yarn and pull through the loop, leaving a tail to sew onto the chick.

Final Touches

Using crochet hook, sew the beak and wings onto the chick. Weave any loose ends in by pulling them into the body with your crochet hook.

Cut a few pieces of yarn and weave it through the top of the chick to make his “mohawk.”
