My brother is a big portal 2 fan, and has wanted a companion cube of his own for ages. It's great because it can't leave because it has no legs. So this year I made him one for Christmas! I created the pattern myself, which was a new experience for me. It took a while, but the result was amazing! Feel free to try out this pattern for yourselves :)

Materials:

- 1 skein pink yarn (I used Loops and Threads Charisma in 'Think Pink')

- 2 skeins light grey yarn (I used Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn in 'Grey Heather')

- 2 skeins dark grey yarn (I used Loops and Threads Charisma in 'Charcoal')

- Scissors

- Yarn needle

- Stuffing

Make 6 Little Hearts

Make 6 of hearts using pink yarn.

I used a really good pattern for my crochet heart found here:

Make 6 Circles

DSC_0237 (2).JPG

Here we make six circles that are just big enough to fit a heart inside it.

Using light grey yarn:

Begin with a magic loop

10 single crochet (sc) inside the loop

Round 1: double crochet (dc) in each stitch

Round 2: repeat round 1

Round 3: repeat round 1, but only halfway around the circle

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Make 6 Sides of the Cube

Using dark grey yarn, make six squares.

Row 1: ch 15

Row 2-13: ch 2, turn, dc in third stitch from hook, dc in each stitch across

Fasten off, weave in ends.

With pink yarn: slip stitch (st) on the front of the square to create two perpendicular lines, crossing in the middle

Make 12 Little Rectangles

Make 12 rectangles which will be sewn on the edges of the cube using light grey yarn.

Row 1: ch 4

Row 2-5: ch 1, turn, sc in second stitch from hook, sc in each stitch across

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Make 8 Corners

DSC_0239 (2).JPG

Using light grey yarn, make 8 corners for the cube:

Row 1: ch 5

Row 2-4: ch 1, turn, sc in second chain from hook. Sc in each stitch across, making two sc in the last stitch.

Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc in third chain from hook. Sc in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn

Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in second chain from hook. Sc in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn

Row 7: repeat row 5

Row 8: repeat row 6

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Once all sides are assembled, sew them together, making sure to leave one edge open.

Carefully sew the rectangles on the edges and the crocheted corners on the corners of the box.

Finishing Touches

Stuff the cube and sew the last edge shut. Carefully sew on the final edge and final two corners. And that's it! You are done! So give the cube a hug, you deserve it after all that work! And unlike the cake, this cube is not a lie.
