Cricket Protein Brownies
WARNING: There is a possible risk of allergic reaction to cricket protein for people with shellfish allergies. Make sure to inform anyone eating these brownies that they contain crickets, which could trigger a shellfish allergy.
Did you know that crickets contain 9 grams of protein per tablespoon? It takes 1,000 gallons of water, and a tremendous amount of space and energy to make one pound of whey protein from cow's milk, but only 1 gallon of water, very little space, and virtually no energy to produce a pound of cricket protein.
You can make these delicious brownies for your friends and family, with an extra kick of protein!
Watch this video and follow along the directions below.
Supplies
1 Box of your favorite brownie mix
1/4 cup of cricket protein powder (I used the "Eat Bugs" brand, but there are others)
Water
Egg
Vegetable Oil
Baking cups (optional)
9x9" baking pan or cupcake pan.
Gather and Prepare Your Ingredients
Follow the directions on your brownie mix, but you will probably need:
- Water
- Vegetable Oil
- 1 Egg
In addition, you will need a large mixing bowl, and either a 9x9" pan, or cupcake tin to bake the brownies. (I made cupcakes, with paper cupcake wrappers for easy cleanup and portions.)
Combine Your Wet Ingredients First
At this step, add the water, oil, and egg, or whatever wet ingredients your recipe requires to the large mixing bowl. Mix all wet ingredients together first.
Add Your Dry Ingedients
Now, add the brownie mix and stir until completely mixed.
Measure 1/4 cup of cricket protein mix, and mix completely. You will need to add a slight more water to help the dry cricket powder mix, but be careful not to make the brownies runny.
Pour Mix Into Pan, or Spoon Into Baking Cups
Prepare your baking pan with either cooking spray or parchment paper, or line a cupcake pan with baking cups.
Preheat over to 350 degrees, or as instructed on the packaging.
Bake at 350 for 25-30 Minutes
Bake your brownies according to manufacturer's directions. If you are using baking cups, they may cook slightly faster, so after 20 minutes, check with a toothpick or clean knife for doneness. Don't overcook or they will dry out.
