Creepy Scarecrow Replica of Someone You Love
My sister was getting married, and they live on a farm (he's a farmer and she runs a farm-to-table business). So I decided that personalized scarecrows would be a thoughtful gift!
Oddly, I didn't find any tutorials for making them, so I thought I'd share my process here, for anyone else looking to gift a similarly creepy display of affection.
Supplies
- Scissors
- Thread & needle
- Pillowcase with faces printed on it (I ordered one from Collage.com)
- Poly-fil stuffing
- Clothing (I used children's size large clothes from Goodwill)
- Wig
- Hat / hair piece (optional)
- 5-6' wooden stakes
- 1 bale of hay
- 6 zip ties
Make the Heads
- Take the pillowcase you ordered and cut through both the front and back of the case, about 0.5" from the face, and including the neck.
- Flip both layers of fabric around so that they're facing each other.
- Sew the layers together along the face line, leaving the bottom of the neck open.
- Flip the face right-side-out.
- Stuff the face.
- Sew along the bottom of the chin, so the neck is left empty.
- Sew wig, hat and/or head accessories to the stuffed head.
Sew Clothes to Head
- Lay out the clothes as you want them to fit. You'll want a high-necked shirt, and I found kids size large clothes to be a good size.
- Sew the neck of the shirt to the neck of the head, all the way around but leaving a 3" gap in the back (the stake will go through there).
- Sew the pants / overalls to the shirt.
Pack It Up (optional)
- If you need to travel with the scarecrow, you'll pack it up in this state.
- Note: try not to pack anything that goes against TSA guidelines along with it - you won't want to explain this to airport security.
Stuff & Stake It
- Put the stake up one pant leg, through the shirt, and out the back of the shirt neck. It should go half way up the back of the head.
- Cut small holes in the back of the head, on either side of the stake.
- Put a zip tie through the head holes and around the stake. Pull it tight. This will keep the head from drooping.
- Add another couple of zip ties through holes in the back of the shirt to hold the shirt to the stake.
- Stuff all the clothes with lots of straw, letting it poke out the wrist and ankle holes.
Stick It in the Ground!
- Your scarecrow is ready for its new home!
- If it's hard ground, you'll want to make a hole with an auger or other hole-making device.
- Stick the post into the hole.
- Boom!
