We'll be making a jar that lights up when you close the lid!

What You'll Need:

- a jar with a lid

- two LED lights

- two 3V coin batteries

- copper tape

- regular clear tape

Tape the Negative Battery Connection on the Jar

1. Use the copper tape and tape a line first going horizontally to the right a short distance, then up vertically until you reach the very top of your jar (make sure to put the tape over the jar's lip)

2. Make a lump of copper tape by folding it over itself several times and tape it to the end of the copper tape that is in the middle of the jar

Secure the Battery and Tape the Positive Battery Connection

1. Stack the batteries, both of them with the positive side facing upwards

2. Tape them over the bump in the middle of the jar with copper tape or regular tape with the negative side touching the copper tape lump (make sure your battery is securely touching the copper tape)

Next tape the positive connection

3. Put tape on the positive side of the battery going horizontally to the left a short distance, then up vertically until you again reach the top of the jar (make sure to put the tape over the jar's lip)

Tape the LEDs on the Inside of the Lid

First, we'll use the copper tape to create the bottom layer of the series circuit connection

1. Use the copper tape and tape 3 separate lines next to each other horizontally on the inside of your lid

2. Tape a line to the edge of the lid starting from each outside end of the 2 outermost lines (view video)

Next, we'll be taping down the LEDs. You need to keep in mind on which side the negative and positive connections will be touching the copper tape on the lid, so we can tape down the LEDs correctly. The LEDs will be taped in between the 3 lines, in the two spaces between them with the rods touching the copper wire on each side

3. Since the negative connection is on the left and the positive connection is on the right on the jar, we will tape down the LEDs so that the anode (longer rod) is facing towards the positive side and the cathode (shorter rod) is facing the negative side.

Extend Tape to Create Connection

1. Add as much tape as needed on the edge of the lid so that it reaches the tape on the jar when the lid is put on

2. Tape down two copper tape lumps with the copper tape that will match up with the copper tape on the top of the jar when the lid is put on

When the tape on the jar and tape on the lid touch, the circuit will be connected and complete and the LEDs will light up!
