Creative Costume Makers Unite!

For the past 5 years I have been designing costumes for the NYC Greenwich Village Halloween Parade.

What started as a hobby is blooming into a successful small business.  Over the last 16 months I have been contracted to do custom work for a variety of projects.  Some of these include submissions into international technology and art installations, working for clothing designers and making some pretty odd (but fantastic) custom designs.

One of my designs was featured in a music video – and another found its way into Joe Cross’ documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.  In addition, I have authored several patterns which are quite popular in the knitting world.

The time has come for me to fully launch the costume business.  Up until now, all marketing has been  via word of mouth.  With the money from this contest, I would be able to purchase the proper equipment (i.e. industrial sewing machine) and set aside some money for studio space and storage.  Currently, all of my projects are made in my tiny New York City living room.  It’s fun, but not very practical.  (My last project was 12’ x 6’ when completed…. my entire living room is 18’x12’… ack!)

But this is about more than equipment and work space.

I have always thought it would be awesome to arrange over-the-top costume parties throughout the year.  Whether it is for a cause, or simply a reason to dress up - I love the idea of bringing fellow costume lovers together outside of Halloween.

This is our chance to make it happen.

With a little legwork we could locate donated space & sponsors, set up a social network of costume participants and voilà – we’ve got ourselves a costume gala!
