Create a Necklace Holder Using Rocks

I wanted to create a necklace holder and decided to use rocks to make it, as it would fit my bathroom floor.

For this project, I will be using a piece of scrap wood (a thin plywood plank), you can decide the dimensions.

I'll also need a black fabric (I used an old t-shirt that couldn't be used anymore) as well as a fabric glue that can be used on wood.

I used rocks which are used to hang the collars, select them wisely, if possible with a flat side and with sufficiently sharp edges.

I used two drill bits (one to make pre-holes and the other to make the hole the right size) as well as a drilling machine.

And finally, tiny screws (that will have to be slightly bigger than the biggest of your drill bits)

Preparing the Plank

This step will really depend on the size you wish your holder to be, and on the pieces of wood you have at your disposition.

Once you have cut your piece of wood, don't forget to quickly sand the edges.

Make sure your piece of fabric is bigger than the plank you will be using.

Gluing the Fabric to the Wood Plank

I started by cutting a square of farbic slightly larger than my wood plank. I have then tried to equally spread the glue on the main side of the piece of wood, and by stretching the fabric, to avoid creating folds, I glue them together.

Once completely dried, I needed to cut the excess of fabric on the back side, and glue the small bands of fabrick on the backside.

Preparing the Rocks

To prepare the rocks, I started by placing them very tightly in a clamp, so the process will be easier. Be careful not to overtighten, or you might risk to break the rock.

Start by using the smallest drill bit to create a pre-hole. Make sure you go slowly to also avoid breaking the rock.

Then, use the bigger drill bit to widen the hole.

Try to rotate the drilling machine, in order to make the inside of the hole bigger than the outside, so the screw will fit better and the rock will be more stable on the support.

Try putting a screw to see if it fits, and continue drilling until it does.

Placing the Stone on the Board

Last Step !

Once your wooden plank with the fabric is dry, by using a compass, create little holes in the fabric (this will make sure you don't tear the fabric when putting the screws)

Add the screws and leave the head in the outside of the board (2-3 millimeters)

You can then add your rocks and you're done ! :)

You can then attach your holder on your wall ! (I drilled holes in the plank and placed it on screws on the wall)
