Create Your Own Terrarium

Terrariums are easy to make with inexpensive or even free supplies. I personally save my old pasta jars and use those for my terrariums.

Before you begin making your terrarium you'll need to find the following supplies:

• Small rocks around 1-2mm in diameter (can be found at pet shops or hobby stores)
• Activated charcoal (found in the fish aisle of pet stores)
• Potting soil
• Moss (Can be found outside or ordered online)
• Small plant (Optional and can also be found outside)
• A sealed container (A mason jar or spice jar will do just fine
• Something to scoop rocks, charcoal and soil into the container
• Ziploc Bag
  
  First you'll begin by filling your jar with your rocks. Depending on the size of your jar, you'll fill it with 1/2"-1" of rocks. The terrariums I made are extra special because the rocks I used in them are from Brighton Beach in the UK from a vacation one year. 
  
  Next you'll place 3 parts soil and 1 part activated charcoal in a Ziploc bag and mix thoroughly.Once you've mixed your potting soil and activated charcoal you'll scoop anywhere from 1/2"-2" of the mixture into your jar. Pat down the soil mixture to avoid any air bubbles and to ensure that there won't be soil flying everywhere when you decide to relocate your terrarium.
  
  Now you'll need to add an additional 1" of your soil above your soil and activated charcoal mixture.
  
  Now you can place any plants you want into your jar. Make sure that they have plenty of room. You'll then place your moss around the plant and fill up as much area as you can.
  
  Water your soil, plant and moss enough so that you can feel slight dampness in the jar and seal the jar tight. Now you've got your very own terrarium!
