Create Your Favorite Toy

ProjectCover- Favorite Toy v2.png

The following information is a single lesson in a larger Tinkercad project. Check out this and more projects on Tinkercad.

For this lesson you will be creating your favorite object or toy! Since everyone’s object or toy will vary, this lesson will help you to simplify an object. Simplifying an object is meant to help us understand the object, remember the object, and makes it easier to add the details later. To simplify an object we can use lines, shapes, and/or volumes.

Instructions

  1. Continue to the next step.

Simplify Shapes

When simplifying, look for the biggest line or shape that can be made. The blue snowflake was simplified using lines. The red snowflake was simplified using diamond shapes.

Instructions

  1. Continue to the next step.

Simplify 3D Shapes

Picture3.png

If your object is made of several smaller pieces, like the necklace, you can create shapes by grouping pieces together. Look to make groups by size, color, and/or importance.

Instructions

  1. To simplify in 3D, basic volumes are used. Tinkercad has these basic volumes to use.

  2. Continue to the next step.

Prepare Your Simplified Design

Take your object or photo and spend 15 to 20 minutes to simplify it. (If students finish before time is up, challenge them to see their object differently to create a different simplification like the snowflake)

Instructions

  1. Continue to the next step.

Building Your Model

Picture6.png

Now that you have simplified your object, and know which basic shapes to use, open Tinkercad and use your drawing to build the model with the basic shapes.

Instructions

  1. If there isn’t a basic volume that fills a simplified shape you drew don’t let that stop you. You can create your own shapes by using groups and holes.

  2. Continue to the next step.

Keep Building!

This is how the middle piece was made for the headphones.

Instructions

  1. A box and round roof were grouped together.
  2. A copy of the group was made and turned into a hole. Then it was scaled down to create the thickness of the piece, and stretched so it goes completely through the bottom of the original group.
  3. Continue this process to complete your toy or object.
