I made this crayon roll for my niece.  It is great to have on the go for kids.  This was only my third sewing project, so I was very pleased with how it turned out and she loved it.

Getting Started and Sewing the Pockets

To make this, I started with 3 pieces of material that were 18 inches wide x 6 inches high. Two pieces will be matching for the front and back and one piece different for the pockets. Once you have your materials selected, you need to fold the inside pocket piece in half and lay it on the inside piece of fabric showing the design. You will need to pin this in place or use a piece of wonder tape, etc to hold the material in place.

Now, you will need to make a space for each crayon pocket 1 inch apart and then stitch the pockets. You should have 16 pockets.  I used a zig zag stitch because I thought it would be fun, but if you are making this for a younger child, you may want to use a straight stitch for extra hold.

Adding the Ribbon and Finishing Up

Now, you are ready to add your ribbon. You will need to stitch ribbon to the center of one end of the roll. Make sure your ribbon does not have the design showing and you have folded it in half. This ribbon will be used to tie the crayon roll up once it is finished.

Next, you need to lay your other piece of outside fabric on top of this piece so that the designs are facing each other. Then, pin this together and sew around the edges. Leave a small hole on one end so you will be able to turn your crayon roll inside out.

Now, I used the ribbon to pull mine inside out. Once it is turned inside out, you can then stitch up the hole you left and topstitch around the top of the crayon roll also.

The Final Product

Now, you are ready to add 16 crayons to the crayon roll and tie it up.  Once the crayons are inside, just roll the crayon roll up and the ribbon will come together to tie around the roll and make a cute bow to hold the crayons all in place.
