Crayon Flower Basket Where the Roses Spit. 🥀

Crayons are used to create flowers, and the crayon-filled terrazzo basket serves as a vase. The interesting part is that the flowers can shower water all day. Yes, it's a water fountain made with crayons.

Colorful crayons are cut and crushed into small bits-like pieces. These bits will be used to create the terrazzo effect in the next step.

Before we began, we measured each side of our base and the thickness of the tiles we wanted. Here, the thickness of our tiles is 1.5 cm. We took straight wooden sticks of similar thickness and made a rectangular frame from four sides.

• Wax is melted and poured into a wooden frame of 1.5 cm in height.
• Crayon bits are sprinkled upon the melted wax and left to settle and dry.
• Then, using a metal scraper, the wax tiles are scraped and smoothed.

Five sides of tiles were made to form a rectangular base. (bottom, front, back, left, right)

The tiles were then welted by melting the sides of the tiles using a hot air gun, which allowed each tile to melt and stick with each other. The terrazzo box was then tested for any water leakage.

The shower system was made using a small spray bottle cap. A few holes were made using board pins on the cap. And an 8mm soft pipe was fitted using a handmade sun board washer and glued together to form a seal that was leak-free.

• Red crayons and wax were melted together.
• Melted wax dollops are poured onto a glass sheet.
• Glass sheets were folded and clipped to give curve-shaped petals.
• Petals are then stuck using melted crayons on and around the shower-head.

• 18 gauge galvanised iron wire was inserted into 10mm soft pipes to give them a curved shape.

• Two 0.6-1 watt water submersible pumps were connected to each end of the 10mm soft pipe.
• To support the branches, small moulds were made out of sunboards, and wax was pored into the mould using a funnel.
• After the wax had dried and the pipes were fixed, the sun board moulds were taken off.

• Attach the rose petals with molten wax.
• Attach the roses to the pipe. The 8 mm soft pipes from the flower's end, when inserted into the 10 mm soft pipes made for the branch, make a perfect snug fit.

• Green crayons and wax melted together using a hot air gun.
• Melted wax painted on the pipe's body with a paint brush
• After drying, the pipes will look like beautiful green coloured branches.

• Scraped crayons(deep green, light green and blue) with a utility knife over plain white paper.
• covered with another sheet of white a4 paper
• used clothing irons to hot press the paper, which melted the crayons between the papers.
• I removed the top paper and drew the leaves using a marker pen.
• The leaf outlines were cut and stuck with molten wax onto the pipe.

After the leaves were stuck, it was time to put the fountain to life. I poured some water into the terrazzo base and submerged the submersible pumps completely. And the last thing was to power the water pumps.

I used a 9-volt battery for each pump. We can also use a mobile charger to power the submersible pumps. I have entered the links to the pumps, mobile chargers, and 9-volt batteries under the supply list.

Altogether, it was a joyful experience to work on this project. Making the flower petals was fun, and making the terrazzo tiles and scraping them to length was challenging. The tiles can break easily if we start to scrape them too early, and it's recommended to wait 5–10 minutes to let them completely dry off, or you can mist some water over the tiles to make the curing process quicker. After it has dried completely, use a metal scraper to shave the top.
