Crayon Art on Rocks

This is an ible' about crayon art, and I'll be showing you how to create some pretty amazing projects. And as long as there is an adult around, the second project is really fun for kids!

Supplies

You are going to need several things. For the first project you are going to need a rock, (I got this one from a local creek, but anywhere you can find a nice one will do) a candle, a lighter, and crayons. NOTE, this project requires lit flames, so always use caution when attempting this craft. If you are going to do the second project, (2nd picture), you are going to need a rock, crayons, a hair dryer and scissors

Cleaning the Rocks

If you got your rocks out of a creek (like me) I strongly recommend you wash your rocks. Just place them in a laundry tub, cover them in warm water, add soap and scrub! The dirt should come off easily, and you'll be so glad you didn't go ahead and start working on them right away! :) The amount of mud a rock can hide is amazing!

Peeling the Crayon

Before you begin any of the projects, you are going to need to peel the crayon. I find it easiest to start from the bottom, but it doesn't really matter, as long as all the paper comes off in the end! :)

1st Project

First, you are going to need to light the candle. After this, everything is relatively simple. Hold a peeled crayon over the candle for about a second, and then press against the rock. Repeat, switching to other colours if desired, until it looks something like the 4th picture. Your rock is going to look different than mine of course, choose colours that you think go well together. This is completely a matter of personal taste.

2nd Project

This project is much safer, as the only heat involved is a hairdryer. (HOWEVER, melted wax splatters, and while this wax isn't hot enough to burn you at all, you do not want any of this in your carpet. I always work on a disposable tablecloth, and I recommend you do as well.) To make this, simply snip slices of crayon out, place them on the rock, turn the hair dryer to max and watch them melt! It takes a few minutes, but once the get going, they'll look the picture 5 in no time!

Get Creative!

These projects are only meant to be guidelines, you can do whatever you want with this idea. The picture above is a very common idea for canvas, so I thought I'd shake things up by doing it on a rock! So get creative! The only limit in this case is your imagination!

Finished!

These are some ideas to get you started, but it doesn't end here! Find colours you like and keep inventing! Share what you make in the comments below, and if you have any ideas, please, share those as well. Happy making!
