Crash Bandicoot Crates

FKFXS6FKRHSABPC.jpg
Recently I made some crates from Crash Bandicoot as its a video game I have loved since I was a kid. They aren't very big and have absolutely no function but I think they look cool (mine decorate my bookshelf). I'm not very good at explaining things or giving instructions (or following them) but im going to give it a shot. I'll try to explain it as best I can and in as much detail as possible so this may get a little long.

(For some reason some of the images are upside down, i have no clue why or how to fix it. Sorry.)

Supplies

Mountboard
Card
Paint
Paint Brushes
Sponge (optional)
Scoring Tool (a inkless pen if you dont have one)
Craft Knife
Cutting Mat
Pencil & Ruler
Glue

Creating & Making the Base (cube)

First you will need to make a basic cube out of card. This will be your starting point. I used a 5x5 cm cube but you can use any size you like. Instead of folding along the lines score them, it will make it look neater.
Use glue or double sided tape to put the cube together.

Now that you have your base cube you need to add the first layer of mountboard. For this you will need to decide which crate you want to make. They all have more or less the same basic design, the only difference mostly being the images on the crates.

Lets do the TNT crate.
Start with a 5x5cm square.
Split the square into 5, these will be the wood panels. Transfer your template to Mountboard and cut it out. Now add the wood texture using a scoring tool (i used a no longer working white pen) random lines & squiggles will do. (See image 1 & 2) This will be what you use for most Crates.

On a piece of paper draw the TNT crate layout (the logo & lines). Starting with 5x5cm square. Draw the first yellow stripe 1cm from the top of the square with a thinckness of 0.4cm. The TNT logo will go 0.4cm underneath the yellow stripe and it will be 1.4cm tall and centered in the middle of the box (0.8cm from the box sides)
The bottom yellow stripe will be 0.4cm under TNT and is the same thickness as the first. (See 3rd image for template i used)

Now you need to paint it. For the wood panels alternate between a dark red and a light red (i used a sponge for this). For the stripes & TNT you'll need yellow.
I made the mistake of painting it all red first which meant the yellow didnt show. If you can paint around the parts that are supposed to be yellow.

Final Layer & Templates

For the outer layer you will need to start with a square that is 5.4x5.4cm. Now draw a smaller squarr inside the first one that measures 3.8x3.8cm. (It should be 0.8cm from the edges of the first square). Next you need to draw a 'x' in the smaller square, the 'x' should be 0.5cm in width. (See image 1 for reference). Transfer to Mountboard and cut out, you will need 6 of these. (again see image 1 for reference).
You will use this template for most crates.
Once its all cut out lay it over the first layer so you can mark the spaces that need to be yellow.
Paint it red (the lighter red used earlier) and paint the yellow parts.

Putting It All Together

To put it all together you will need glue or double sided tape.
Take your first layer pieces (the 5x5cm squares) and stick them to the base cube. The top and bottom pieces should just be red (no logo) the pieces with TNT will be the sides.
Now take the outer/final layer pieces (5.4cm squares) and stick them on to the box making sure the logo & stripes line up.

And your done!
