Cozy Low-Height Reading Chair With Integrated Book Storage

A comfortable reading space is essential for book lovers, but finding the right chair that offers both comfort and functionality can be challenging. That’s why I designed this low-height reading chair—a cozy seat that keeps you close to the ground while also providing built-in storage for your favorite books.
This DIY chair is perfect for small spaces, combining a compact design with easy-access storage to keep your reading materials within arm’s reach. In this Instructable, you’ll learn how to create your own reading-friendly chair, ideal for relaxing while keeping your books neatly organized. Let’s get started!

Design a CAD Model

Before building the low-height reading chair with book storage, it's essential to create a detailed CAD model to visualize the design and ensure precise dimensions. Using CAD software, I designed a compact yet sturdy chair that balances ergonomics and functionality, keeping in mind both comfort and storage efficiency.
The model includes:
- A low-height seat for a relaxed reading posture.
- Built-in book storage compartments on the sides or underneath for easy access.
- Optimized dimensions to fit in small spaces while maintaining stability.
- Smooth edges and curved surfaces for a comfortable and aesthetic finish.
By designing this in CAD first, I was able to refine the proportions, test structural integrity, and make necessary adjustments before moving to actual construction. In this Instructable, I’ll guide you through both the CAD modeling process and the physical build to help you create your own reading chair with storage.

Erect the Primary Support

Start by preparing the laser-cut components based on your CAD model. These parts should be cut to precise dimensions, including the frame pieces, seat panels, and book storage compartments. Lay out all the components in an organized manner to ensure that you have everything ready for assembly. If necessary, clean up any rough edges or excess material to ensure the cuts are smooth and the parts fit together seamlessly.
Assembling the Primary Support Frame

The next step is to build the primary support frame. Begin by attaching the vertical supports to the base using screws or wood glue, following the design from your CAD model. Ensure each connection is tight and secure, checking for square alignment to prevent tilting. You may also consider adding horizontal reinforcements to stabilize the structure further, ensuring the frame is robust enough to bear weight and provide a stable foundation for the seat and storag
Attaching the Seat Panel

Once the primary frame is in place, move on to attaching the seat panel. Depending on your design, you may have a single piece for the seat or a slatted design. Align the seat properly with the frame and secure it with screws or nails. Ensure it is level and firmly attached to the structure to provide a comfortable and stable seating surface.
Installing the Book Storage Compartments

Now, focus on adding the book storage compartments. These can be positioned under the seat, along the sides, or in any other location specified in your design. Attach the storage panels securely to the frame using screws or brackets. Make sure that the compartments are easily accessible and functional for storing books, and ensure that all the connections are firm and stable.
Final Adjustments and Finishing Touches

Once the main structure and storage compartments are in place, check for any loose screws or misaligned parts. Make adjustments as needed to ensure the chair is stable and functional. Then, apply any finishing touches such as sanding rough edges, painting, or staining the chair for a polished and aesthetic look. Ensure that the chair is smooth and comfortable for use, and check that the book storage works as intended.
