Cosy Pocket Scarf
I am a knitting beginner, knitting is hard and tricky for us but if you're looking for an easy project then a pocket scarf is perfect. I love collecting knitting projects from different sources and find this one so straight forward and practical. It's fun to have a scarf that does two jobs for you. Keeping warm and being a little pocket for your phone. It's super easy to make so, why not?
Materials Needed:
- 6 mm needles
- tapestry needle
- Yarns: I used bonus chunky wool from Hayfield ( 100g), to make the same pattern you will need 2 colours but of course you don't have to follow exactly my colour of choice, just use 2 contract colours which are a bright one( colour A) and darker than colour A( colour B).
- Colour A for the brim and 1/2 of the scarf: 2 white chunky(100g)
- Colour B for pocket and 1/2 of the scarf: 3 black chunky wool (100g)
Others: Measuring Tape
Scissors
Casting on 23 Stitches in Colour A
for those who got no clue what is cast on: it's simple but also can be very tricky at the beginning
Make a slip knot:
1. make a loop, leave the tail end long enough (to weave in at the end of knitting)
2. put the ball end underneath the loop
3. Place the left-hand needle under the tail that has been put behind the loop
4. pulling both of the tails.
Cast on
cable method makes sure the tension is tight enough (and the only one I feel most comfortable and confident).
1. pass the right-hand needle through the slip knot ( the pointy of R-H needles is behind and upward the L-H needle)
2. Wrap the wool around the pointy part of RH needle
3. Purl the wool through the slip knot ( this might be tricky a bit but eventually you can do it)
4. Slip the new loop onto the left-hand needle. ( you have made 2 stitches)
5. Place the RH needle in between the two stitches
6. Wrap the wool around the pointy of RH needle then purl through
7. Slip this onto the left-hand needle. 8. Keep working this way until you have the required numbers of stitches.

Abbreviations

**: repeat instructions until double asterisk as directed
beg: begin(ning)
CA: colour A
CB: colour B
cont: continue
k: knit
p: purl
In order to make the scarf, you have to know how to knit and purl which are the most basic of knitting really.
Starting
After cast on the required number of stitches, follows the pattern:
1.
- Knit 5 rows in CA
- Row 6: RS( right side): change to colour B (watch the video below to know how to change colour) and knit
- Row 7:WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
- Cont until the length is about 10 cm ( 4 in), you are forming the front of the pocket.
- End when you finish an RS then
- Next row: RS( right side): knit
- After the next row: WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
The reason is you're doing the reverse of the pocket, like fold it up when finished.
Keep following the pattern till the length is about 50cm( 20 in) then change to CA
- RS( right side): knit
- WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
( thanks to this helpful video by knitwithpat, without it I don't know how to knit at all)
2.
Keep following the pattern for more 40 cm ( 15 in) then swap to CB
- RS( right side): knit
- WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
3.
Keep following the pattern for more 30 cm ( 12 in) then swap to CA
- RS( right side): knit
- WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
4.
Following the pattern for more than 40 cm (15 in) than swap to CB.
- RS( right side): knit
- WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
I know you're confusing here a little, but it is just like a pattern light, dark, light, dark, light, dark, light and you can change the length as you go.
5.
When you reach the wanted length, knit an extra 10 cm for the pocket and don't forget to reverse:
End when you finish an RS
then Next row: RS( right side): knit
After the next row: WS(wrong side):k3,*p1,k1*, till the last three stitches knit 3(k3)
6.
The last 5 rows: swaps to CA and Knit 5 rows
Bind off.
Finishing
The scarf's length will be about 180cm (71 in), width: 15 cm (5.9in)
All you need to do now:
Weave in loose ends and
Sew the pocket by flipping up the 10 cm extra, using 'blanket stitch'.
