Learn step by step how to set up your remote monitoring, sensor telemetry, and Industrial IoT applications with these ingredients:

In the video you’ll see what you need to do to deploy automatic, remote monitoring units for telemetry of factors like:

  • Precipitation / rainfall
  • Ambient temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Barometric pressure
  • Wind speed
  • Wind direction
  • Wild fire fuel moisture risk

Tools.Valarm.net is an open platform that’s compatible with sensors and hardware made by just about any manufacturer from around the world.

Our customers love to use rugged, durable Campbell Scientific and Vaisala hardware.

However, our customers need an easy, affordable cloud platform for all of their remote monitoring information. That’s where the software, Valarm Tools Cloud at Tools.Valarm.net, comes in. We make it quick and simple for you to do all you need to with your sensor information, like:

  • Email alerts
  • Mapping on Esri maps
  • Graphing + Charting
  • APIs for forwarding to your webpages and business analytics / intelligence systems
  • Sensor data downloading in various formats
  • Web-based dashboards viewable on any device, like your phone!

In this video you’ll learn how to configure Campbell Scientific dataloggers to send Industrial IoT sensor and remote telemetry monitoring data to tools.valarm.net just like the unit you see here that 1 of our customers has deployed. In this case our customer is an environmental consultancy company that needed a webpage dashboard with real-time sensor information from the field. This remote monitoring unit is solar powered and uses a CR1000 datalogger connected to a whole bunch of Campbell Scientific and Vaisala sensors. There are sensors for weather and meteorology like temperature, humidity, pressure, solar radiation, and rain fall or precipitation. Since this unit is in a high fire risk area in California, there is also a fire fuel moisture stick sensor.

All of the sensor information goes to Tools.Valarm.net using the Valarm compatible GSM sensor hub you see in the lower left part of the box that has a VR MET sticker on it. Sensor data is regularly uploaded using a 3G GSM mobile cell network and then it’s shown on these interactive maps and widgets that quickly give the customer situational awareness.

How does this all work? Let’s break down the key components!

Here you see a simple remote monitoring unit with a GSM or WiFi sensor hub, an RS-232 serial sensor adapter, a 12V sealed lead acid battery, and a Campbell Scientific CR800 datalogger. We’ll show you step by step how to get your Campbell Scientific sensor data onto tools.valarm.net for mapping, graphing, analytics, and API forwarding to your real-time web dashboards or other business systems.

First, link your sensor hub to tools.valarm.net. If you haven’t done this before see the tutorial video on How to Use Valarm at www.valarm.net. Next configure your RS-232 sensor adapter using virtualhub. Based on your Campbell Scientific program you’ve deployed on your data logger you’ll update the RS-232 settings.

This will work with the CR1000, CR200, and other Campbell Scientific dataloggers as long as they’re set to output CSV, comma separated values, via serial RS-232. In this case we’ve set our Campbell Scientific CR800 datalogger to send sensor data at a 115200 baud rate. Change your settings to reflect the format your Campbell Scientific dataloggers are outputting.

Also note that in virtualhub you can click the serial number of your RS-232 sensor adapter and you’ll see the conversation happening with your Campbell Scientific datalogger. For example, if you programmed your CS datalogger to output every minute you’ll see the CSV output here every minute.

On Tools.Valarm.net, click your sensor hub device in the Device Manager. Then go to CSV Input under Configure Data Path. Here you can configure what field or column will store the data from each Campbell Scientific sensor.

In this example you see a remote monitoring unit with telemetry for wild fire fuel moisture, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, precipitation or rainfall, and other sensor factors. Map them in the order they’re being sent, starting with 0 for the first field your datalogger is outputting. Save your CSV parser setup and now you’re all done! You’ll see your Campbell Scientific sensor data throughout Valarm Tools Cloud on maps, graphs, APIs, and all of the analytical tools available with tools.valarm.net.

Now your Campbell Scientific sensor data can be integrated into Valarm’s real-time web dashboards, like the one you see here. This data is from CR800 and CR1000 dataloggers that have the fire risk sensor, the CS506-L that measures fire fuel moisture. You can also see the rest of the remote environmental monitoring information on gauges and historical graphs.

If you, your teams, your organization or business need custom, real-time web dashboards like this with your logo, send us an email or give us a call at +1 (424) 442-0963. We’ll help you with a solution you can view on any device like your phone, tablet, or anything with a web browser.

You have choices to customize your Industrial IoT / IIoT dashboards like you see in the images where you can choose what sensor reading time ranges are most needed at any moment like:

  • Most Recent
  • 2 Hour Highs
  • 4 Hour Highs
  • 6 Hour Highs
  • 8 Hour Highs
  • 12 Hour Highs
  • 24 Hour Highs
  • 3 Day Highs
  • 5 Day Highs
