Corona Virus Potholder

Learn how to crochet a COVID potholder. The project is made with two flat circles. The "legs" are then crocheted around one of the circles. Afterwards the two circles are sewn together to hide all the red stitches, leaving only the legs visible. Now you can finally be able to smash, bang, and sear this nasty little germ! Let's get started!

Supplies

  • Cotton yarn in gray, red, and black (I used Lily Sugar'nCream)
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

The Main Body

Make 2 using the gray yarn. Weave in all ends on first one (FACE/FRONT). Leave a long tail about 4 feet in length on second (BACK). You will whip stitch them together later on.

MC or ch3 sl st in first ch to make ring

Round 1: ch2 (counts as dc throughout), 11 dc in ring, sl st into top of ch2. (12 dc)

Round 2: ch2, dc in same st as join, 2dc in each st around, sl st into top of ch2. (24 dc)

Round 3: ch 2, 2dc in next st, (1dc, 2dc) rep around, sl st into top of ch2. (36 dc)

Round 4: ch 2, dc in next, 2dc, (1dc in next 2 st, 2dc) rep around, sl st in top of ch2. (48 dc)

Round 5: ch2, dc in next 2 st, 2dc, (1dc in next 3 st, 2dc) rep around, sl st in top of ch2. (60 dc)

Round 6: ch2, dc in next 3 st, 2dc, (1dc in next 4 st, 2dc) rep around, sl st in top of ch2. (72 dc)

You will need the red yarn for this.

Attach yarn to any row 6 dc front loop only on gray face/front circle.

Ch 8, sl st into 3rd ch from hook, ch2, 11 dc into the RING (NOT the ch) you made. Make sure your hook is to the left of the chain 8 strand on the first dc you make into the ring. Turn your work as you put the remaining dc into the ring. Your work should now be facing the right way again. Sl st into the ch 2 at the beginning of the circle. Circle made. Now count 3 chains up from the initial chain 8 strand. Loosely, sl st into this ch. Sl st (loosely) down the next 2 chains and then into the same front loop only of the face so to give a little more stability. Now, sl st (not too tight!) into the back third loop of the face in the next 7 dc. Sl st into the front loop only of the next stitch. Repeat from beginning until 9 legs are made. Weave in all ends.

Give It a Face

You will need black yarn to make the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth.

For eyes:

Magic circle. 10 hdc in circle, sl st into top of first hdc. Make 2. Leave a long tail so as to attach eyes onto face.

Once attached use the same yarn to make a funny mouth and some mean eyebrows.

Place the back and face wrong sides together, right sides will be facing out. Using the long tail, whip stitch in the back loops only to attach them together. Weave in all ends. You are done! Now go smash it with a hot pot!
