Copper Coil Speaker

I will show you how to create a copper coil speaker in a aluminum bucket.

You will need:

• a small, aluminum bucket (make sure the bucket isn’t conductive)
• copper wire
• electrical tape

• large, neodymium magnets (about 1/2 inch diameter http://www.amazon.com/3-Count-CMS-Magnetics%C2%AE-Neodymium-Permanent/dp/B000UCVARK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_328_29?ie=UTF8&dpID=41qnamCHvxL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=12KG44NZDJFQCCBNRK5D)
• inexpensive headphones
• sandpaper
• jumper wire (optional)
• soldering iron (optional)
• solder (optional)

First, cut 3 pieces of wire each about 3 1/2 feet long and twist these three pieces together. This makes the wire a bit thicker.

Lay the piece of the thick wire you just made on a flat surface and bend the first five inches of the wire up at a 90 degree angle. Arrange the wire into a spiral using the piece that sticks up as it’s center point. Don’t let any of the pieces of the spiral touch each other.

Once you have about three layers of the spiral, take the aluminum bucket and tape the coil into the bottom of the bucket with the electrical tape. Continue coiling and taping the pieces down, still making sure that the coils aren’t touching each other.

Once the coil is done, bend the end of it up like you did with the middle and connect the alligator clips to it.

Stick the neodymium magnets on the bottom of the bucket

Take the headphones and cut the earpieces from them. Just to be clear, we want to use the end with the plug.

Then cut the ends of the headphone wires with a wire stripper and sand the wires. make sure you do a pretty good job sanding as this will be how the current runs through.

You can also solder these wires to pieces of jumper wire so the connections are a little stronger. This is highly recommended.

clip the other side of both alligator clips should be clipped to one of the two headphone wires.

Plug the headphones jack into the computer and play your favorite song and VOILA!!!

If the speaker isn’t working, you may need to adjust different aspects of it, like the size, tightness, or thickness of the coil.
