Cooling Backpack Attachment

Introduction:
Have you ever felt hot and uncomfortable when carrying a backpack on a summer day? Whether you’re hiking, biking, or walking outdoors, your back can quickly become sweaty and overheated.
To solve this problem, We designed a Cooling Backpack Attachment — a lightweight and flexible module that can be mounted on the back panel of any regular backpack. It actively cools your back using circulating chilled water, keeping you comfortable and refreshed even in hot weather.
What Makes It Different:
There are already many “cooling backpacks” on the market — but most of them are integrated units, meaning the cooling system is built inside a specific backpack model.
That means you can’t use your favorite backpack or switch between different ones.
This project changes that.
The Cooling Backpack Attachment is a universal add-on:
- You can mount it onto any backpack you already own.
- It’s modular, so you can easily remove or reattach it.
- It turns any ordinary backpack into a smart, temperature-controlled one.

How It Works

1. A thermoelectric (Peltier) module cools water inside a compact reservoir.
2. A mini pump circulates the cooled water through TPU tubing embedded in a flexible cooling plate.
3. The plate sits between the backpack and the wearer’s back to transfer cooling.
4. A heatsink and fan remove heat from the hot side of the Peltier for stable operation.
5. Cooling level is adjusted by controlling Peltier input and pump speed.
Iteration

Throughout our design process, we went through multiple iterations, and in each version we discovered new problems and made improvements to make the product better.
