Converting Old MP3 Player to Powerful Bass Music Player
Hi Readers in this Instructables I will show you how I converted my old MP3 player to a powerful bass output music player. This has very good sound output compared to its size and most importantly it has a very large battery backup to keep the party going.
To begin with let me tell you about my MP3 player, That MP3 player is almost 6 years old and still it works fine and it was just $4 when I bought it online.
The MP3 player has basic, forward, backward, fast forward, and pause play buttons, It has SD card support by which we store our favorite songs, The output is only via a 3.5mm jack and has no loudspeaker output.
I was just tired of listening to songs from this player since it was wired headphones and the battery would drain too soon, So I wanted to modify this to its best version possible, Anyways everyone deserves a second chance!
I made use of simple electronic components to upgrade this player to a whole new level, The results exceeded more than my expectations.
After upgrading this player the songs are played on a bass speaker with good quality music output and the individual batteries provide a very good music playback time which is the most essential feature of any loudspeaker.
Now you have an idea of what you can expect from this project, You can follow the same steps if your old MP3 player is limited to functions like mine.
With this being said let us directly hop into the materials that I used to build this project.
Supplies
These are the list of materials that I used to make this, If you are building this project you can get the components from the links.
Audio amplifier board PAM8403
Old MP3 player
Loud Speaker BASS speakers
A sheet of MDF wood that serves as a stand
18650 batteries Rechargeable
Battery holders single holder
An old bulb that I recycled (anyway we need only the diffuser part)
Apart from this part, we need hot glue and a couple of wires to establish the connections.
Circuit Diagram
This is the circuit that I used to build this project, Don't worry if you have trouble in understanding the circuit connections I will break them into small steps so that you can easily understand.
I will start by dividing the circuit into 2 parts, The first is amplifying the speaker part and the second is the MP3 player part.
Amplifying the speaker
The output from the MP3 player is very low so we need to amplify it, So here comes the role of the audio amplification board. I found that the PAM8403 board fits perfectly for our project because of its size and cost effectiveness
Start by soldering the wires to the board and connect the speaker output wires to the speaker
Now the input for this board will be from the output of the MP3 player's 3.5mm jack pins
Finish this circuit by connecting the battery and a switch
MP3 player part circuit
The inbuilt battery of the player had a very low backup so I had to upgrade this to a lithium-ion battery, I soldered the battery holder directly to the MP3 player board
Now as I said above the 3.5mm jack pins are soldered to the audio input pins on the board
With these simple steps, we can finish the circuit.
No need of wires? You can also simplify this circuit with a PCB, Complete your electronic projects in the best way from PCBWay

Amplifying the Speaker
I found that the size of my speaker is slightly less than the diffuser used on the LED bulb, So to make the outer cover for my speaker I used this.
Just remove the diffuser and make a small hole in it so as to pull out the wires on a speaker.
Solder the wires to the speaker from the soundboard and seal the space between the speaker and diffuser with hot glue.
After this is done glue this setup on a piece of MDF, You can also use cardboard too for this purpose.
I also pasted the battery holder and the control switch, making sure the batteries were inserted in the end when the other circuit was ready.
MP3 Player Connections
This is very straightforward, I have removed the default batteries and directly soldered the battery holder wires here.
Insulate this part with a few drops of hot glue and now solder the wires to the audio jack pin, in my case I used only 2 pins out of 3 and the same wires were connected to the audio input pins.
After soldering add hot glue for insulation and avoid the wires disconnecting in some cases.
The battery will be charged by the MP3 player itself in this case and this part doesn't even need a switch since the player controls the entire circuit.
This completes the circuitry part and i have put all the components on the board and only thing pending now is testing this project.
How to Use
Since you have already built this piece of tech that plays your favorite music using this is not a big deal.
The first thing that I would suggest is to load the SD card full of music because once you power on this device you will never stop listening!
Insert the memory card into the player and turn on the power on button on the player, Now turn on the second circuit that consists of the speaker
This will start to play the music, Adjust the various parameters on the MP3 player accordingly.
Hope you found this project useful Like I say always if you have any questions ask me in the comments.
Working Video
Check this working video of the speaker which shows the bass output and also it has a full building tutorial.
Like I said earlier this speaker has a powerful bass compared to its size and you can load your favorite songs and play it at your parties and have loads of Fun.
That was all about this project, See you in the next project, Have a great holiday and happy making.
