Convertible Infinity Scarf

Infinity scarves are very popular nowadays. But what if you still want to wear a traditional long scarf? Now you don't have to choose! This simple knit scarf has functional buttons that undo the infinity loop and convert it into a traditional scarf, giving you more ways to wear the same cozy garment.

Getting Started

MATERIALS

  • Approximately 300 yards chunky yarn, preferably a wool or alpaca blend for warmth
  • 4 large 1" diameter buttons
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Size 11 knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors


ABBREVIATIONS

  • K - knit
  • YO - yarn over
  • K2tog - knit two together
  • sts - stitches

GAUGE

12 sts x 20 rows = 4"x4" in garter stitch

Casting On

Cast on 22 sts using the Long Tail cast-on method.

Add Buttonholes

K 3 rows. In next row: K5, YO, (K4, YO) three times, K5. (26 sts)

Knit

Continue in Garter Stitch (K every row while turning work) until scarf measures approximately 60 inches (5 feet).

Finishing Touches

Next row, K4, K2tog, (K3, K2tog) three times, K5. (22 sts) K 3 more rows, then cast off.

Sew each button 4 stitches apart and 3 rows up from the bottom of the end you just finished. Fold the scarf in half and line them up with the button holes to help adjust.

Using a tapestry needle, weave in ends.

This scarf can be worn multiple ways: unbuttoned as a regular scarf, in one long loop, or doubled as an infinity scarf. Enjoy and stay warm!
