One of my old lamp became unsightly with time and I had some MDF boards left over from another project. So it was time to build something new.

Here I will describe how I redesign the lamp in individual steps

Supplies

3 DIN A3 MDF boards

Wood glue

Acrylic paint stone look

Laser cutting machine

Rubber rings

Measure and Design

First, I determined the diameter of the inner cylinder of the lampshade. I wanted to map this exactly so that the bulb would not be seen when it was finished.

The diameter of 180 mm is now the basis for further planning in Illustrator.

Here I created a corresponding ring and could thus determine the required number of segments.

The segment length was made dependent on the width of my DIN A3 MDF boards. Here I chose 290 mm length and 7 mm width.

I also wanted to include a curve that spiraled upward around the lampshade.

In Illustrator, I carefully reposition the curve for each segment and gradually move upward

To do this, I had to move the drawn curvature upward accordingly for each segment. (length /(number of segments +1)

Then I connected the lines of each segment with the curvature to achieve an exact fit so that there would be no double cuts during laser cutting.

Cutting Out, Glueing and Painting of the Parts

Then it was time to cut out the individual parts

After the parts were cut, they were glued together and fixed to dry using rubber bands.

For the surface I chose a stone effect varnish. This creates a attractive contrast to the inner tube.

Customizing the Ikea Tube

Last but not least, only the inner tube has to be adjusted in length and glued. Whereby it was so accurately processed that it would hold even without gluing on the inner tube.

The result is wonderful and looks much higher quality than the original lamp

If you don't have an old Ikea lamp, you can use this, my alternative ring instead of the top ring. This is designed for an E27 socket.

Since the inside of the segments are easy to stick with paper or fabric, there is no limit to the color design.

It's my first instructable. I hope you like it and I would love to see your own variations.
