Conserving Water: 2 Stage Toilet Flush
People these days are turning green. And it not from the gas station deli. So here is a little thing you can do in your home wheather you own or rent that you can do to conserve our precious water. Newer (i.e. more exspensive) toilets now come with a 2 stage flusher. Stage 1, a low volume half flush, is for liquid waste; while the stage 2 flush performs a full tank evacuation to wash away the solid waste. As a green consumer you could go to a home improvement store and buy after market toilet parts, but why spend money to conserve? I'll show you how to create a 2 stage flushing toilet for $0.00.
Learn Your Toilet's Parts
Become framiliar with your toilet and how it works.
The lever pulls up on the flapper.
The flapper opens letting tank water fill the bowl.
Tank water level lowers and the fill valve float drops letting fresh water into the tank.
Tank water empties the flapper falls back into place.
Water from the fill valve fills tank.
Water pressure holds flapper down and raises the fill valve float
Fill valve float stop water from filling tank.

Modify the Flushing Action
The flush lever is connected to the flapper with a chain. The chain has a clip on it that allows it to be adjusted. Assuming that your toilet flushes correctly, this it the only thing you will have to adjust.
The trick is to obtain a half flush when you press the handle and a full flush when you press and hold the handle.
To do this disconnect the flapper chain.
Press the handle to 2/3 to 3/4 it's travel position.
Attach the chain to the lever so that the flapper is raised about 3/4 of an inch.
You may end up with slightly different measurements.
