Confess Nest - Interactive Design

The confess nest is here for you to share. Share things you really want to share, share things you don‘t want to share or share something you regret and want to confess. Get something off your chest in the confess nest. When it‘s off your chest you feel free. There is no burden in this world that should make you feel heavier than you really are. Step into the confess nest and feel better when you walk out. Sometimes all we need to do is cry to get something off our chest. We feel better afterwards. Without regrets. Step into the confess nest. It is only between you and the confess nest. What happens in the confess nest stays in the confess nest.

Supplies

Plywood, mdf wood, cardboard pipe, measure tape, marker, leaves, water, onion, textile (curtains), screws, drill, track saw, hot glue, laser cut machine and a 3D printer.

Arduino uno, adafruit motor shield v2.0, computer, electret water pump, fan, electret microphone and all the other tools/materials stated in the electronics part.

Other tools: Sam and Simon (the teachers) :-)

The Mechanism

In the confess nest there are two different kinds of interactive mechanisms that are connected. There is a water pump and a fan both connected to an elecret microphone. When the microphone senses a sound, both the water pump and the fan are turned on for a few seconds.

The water pump is connected to a long silicon pipe. The water pump already existed and is controlled by a small motor. The pump itself is placed in a can of water and when turned on by the microphone it pumps water into the nest from the top of it. A 3D printed nozzle is attached to the other end for adjusting the amount of water coming out. When the microphone activates the water pump a small amount of water drips on the users of the confess nest.

The fan used in the confess nest already existed. The fan is controlled by a motor and the fan is simply glued on to the motor. A small fan was also added though on the existing fan with hot glue to increase the wind and the direction of it. When the microphone turns on the fan, the fan blows wind on the onion that makes users of the confess nest cry.

Two cardboard pipes are located where the fan is blowing that helps to direct the “onion effect” in the user face. The cardboard pipes then make goggles for the user to look into.

By going into the confess nest a person shares something it wants to get off their chest. By talking the microphone activates and the fan and the pump turns on.

The Electronics

What you need here is:

  • Arduino uno
  • Jumper wires
  • Breadboard
  • One 1k Ohm resistor
  • Three 10k Ohm resistors
  • One 100k Ohm resistor
  • One 10 uF capacitor
  • One 10 nf capacitor
  • LM358 op-amp
  • Electret microphone

An electret water pump is also needed and a plug for the power cable.

On the arduino uno adafruit motor shield v2.0 there are four motor ports. The elecret pump is added to port M3 and the fan is added to port M1.The coding is then made in a way the microphone activates both port M1 and port M3. The arduino is runned by a power cable.

The Coding

The coding is done in the arduino software which can be downloaded from the internet onto a computer. Following screenshots show the coding.

The Outlook

The outlook of the confess nest is like a small house. It has three walls and a curved roof.

The Roof is made out of mdf wood. A laser cut machine was used on the mdf wood so it would be able to bend. It was done by engraving lines with special settings adjusted to how deep the engraving should be. When finished with laser cutting the wood was manually and carefully bent so it got this curved roof shape.

The Walls are made of plywood. The sides were sawn by a track saw. The curved side the one is faced when walking into the nest were made by the laser cut machine. The plywood gets pretty burned on the sides due to its thickness and here the settings of the laser cut machine matter. Holes on the wall obviously also made with laser cut.

The Decorations of the confess nest are yellow and red leaves from the fall and branches or whatever found on the streets outside. A sufficient way to glue them on is with hot glue.

Instructions for Using the Confess Nest

The confess nest is here for you to share. Share things you really want to share, share things you don‘t want to share or share something you regret and want to confess. Get something off your chest in the confess nest. When it‘s off your chest you feel free. There is no burden in this world that should make you feel heavier than you really are. Step into the confess nest and feel better when you walk out. Sometimes all we want to do is cry to get something off our chest. We fell better afterwards. Without regrets. Step into the confess nest. It is only between you and the confess nest. What happens in the confess nest stays in the confess nest.

What to do in the confess nest?

1. Step inside.

2. Take a deep breath and think about what you wanna get off your chest. Don’t let the noise of the fan scare you.

3. Put your face towards the goggles and talk about what you want to get off your chest while you look into the goggles. Try to see what is inside the goggles, and the microphone requires at least 15-20 seconds of sound (a story) so the confess nest works properly.

4. When done, wipe your tears and you feel better.

5. Step out when you are ready.
