"Cone-ifer Tree": Holiday Trees Made From Plastic Cone & Pages From an Old Book
These adorable 'Cone-ifer' Trees came about after receiving a gift of plastic cones from an embroidery business and several boxes of old books.
I am a tinkerer at heart and when someone offers me something unusual, I usually say "YES!, I am sure I can do something with it [someday]". So I collect these random items knowing that one day an idea will pop into my head and something unique will be created. This just happen to be one of those ideas.
After creating another book project, I had A LOT of left over pages. A few days later I walked past the cones I had stashed away and at this time I was inspired. Inspired, that is, to create these cute little Cone-ifer Trees.
They stand about 8-10 inches in height.
Supplies
Supplies:
Hot Glue Gun
Hot Glue Sticks
Scissors
Pages from an old Book
Ruler
Click pen
Piece of card stock (4x6)
Plastic Cone
Prep the Book Pages for Application
Remove the pages from a book and cut them down into small squares. The size of the squares is ultimately up to you. These squares were cut into 2" squares, but I have done this with 2.5" squares and it also works.
You will need approximately 80-100 Squares per cone depending on how dense you apply the 'branches'.
*These were cut to size but I bet they would look cute if the pages were torn into ~2"squares.
Creating the Tip of the Tree Base
In this step we will be creating the tip of the tree base. To do this you will need a rectangle piece of card stock. I used a 4 x 6 index card. Trace a half circle on the card then cut it out. Pull the two ends of the half circle together, over lapping the ends and a cone will be created. Adjust the width of the base of the cone to account for the height you wish the tree to be. Using a little glue, secure the shape of the cone. This cone will be applied to the top of the plastic cone. To aid in the adhering of the paper cone to the plastic cone slits were cut from the base (open end) to the tip about half way to the tip. Glue was applied to the flaps of the paper cone and the paper cone was applied to the plastic cone.
*Be careful if you are using hot glue.
Once the paper cone is secured to the plastic cone you are ready to move onto the next step.
Applying the 'Branches' of the Trees
For this step you will need the click pen, paper squares and the hot glue gun.
Using the pen where the point is inside the pen (unclicked) place the tip of the pen in the center of a square of paper. fold the paper around the tip of the pen and flatten. Apply a small dollop of hot glue to the tip of the paper you just folded and secure the tip to the cone. Starting at the bottom and working your way to the tip secure the paper all around the circumference of the cone alternating placement randomly and continuing to move towards the tip.
Tip: Before getting to the top of the cone take a moment to adhere one of the squares to the tip for visual continuity.
Tip: For the last few folded squares being applied to the tip, place a small amount of glue inside of the folded squares to secure them to themselves before being applied to the tip.
Finishing Touches
At this point the trees can be done and enjoyed as is. However, felt can be applied to the base to and a star can be applied to the top to give it a more polished look. If you want to take it up yet another notch, small ornaments can be added to the branches and maybe even a little color. I chose not to do this and the feedback I have received by the simplicity of the look as been nothing but positive.
I hope you have enjoyed making these cute little Cone-ifers and will share your trees with us below.
