Cone Shaped Dog Cave/Bed

My wife and I recently adopted a new puppy who enjoys being in little caves, whether its the spaces between our pillows or our laundry bin. So i decided to make her her own little cave/bed. After looking around online for inspiration I spotted a cone shaped bed and thought "I love that, I can make it" and figured i should share the design. This design is for a small dog but can easily be scaled up or down for your pup or kitty.

Cut your cardboard 41" by 20" half circle

Draw a 10" circle and cut the hole for the entrance in your cardboard.

x2 (42" by 21") fabric rectangles

x2 (21" by 21") fabric squares

Draw a 10" circle and cut the hole for the entrance in your cardboard.

Tip for cutting circles and half circles:

The easiest hack for cutting half circles I've found is to cut a rectangle to the edge proportions of your half circle. Attach a marker to a string and find the center on the long side of your of the rectangle. Place the marker tip on the corner of your rectangle, pull the string tight and hold it down to the center mark. Now hold the sting tight while allowing the sting to guide your arch.

The Cone

Start by placing one of your 42" by 21" fabric rectangles on a flat surface, then layer your cardboard half circle on top of it making sure it is centered, and finally layer your other 42" by 21" fabric rectangle on top. Pin everything in place and move it to your sewing machine(if you're using one).

On your sewing machine align the foot with the cardboard core and use it as a guide as you sew around the complete perimeter of your part removing the pins as you go.

If your machines arm is long enough you can do the same with the inner circle(mine was not). If not it seems best to sew it by hand or wait until step 4 when you're sewing your trim on.

Remove the excess fabric around your part, and cut the circle for the entrance out leaving at least a 1/4" of fabric.

Fold your cone in half and sew the ends together.

You'll need to do a little bit of folding/bending to get the cardboard to take the conical shape.

The Bed

Align your two 21" squares on top of each other and draw a 19" circle. Sew a 1/4" seem around 90% of it to attach them together. Using the hole that remains stuff your circle with whatever you chose for filling. After filling complete the last 10% of the stitch.

Putting It All Together

Center your cone on top of your bed and sew a 1/4" stitch to attach them together. Trim the excess fabric around the base. The attach whatever you chose for trim and your cone cave/bed is complete.
