Complete Garage Re-do PART 3
The photo shows the end of a previous instructable Complete Garage Re-do PART 2
This part 3 will cover the upper wall cabinets. This cabinets were easier because it didn't involve drawers, just shelves with sliding doors.
Supplies
As I mentioned in Parts 1 and 2, Easy Garage was our source of inspiration, we will be grateful to Marcjoli always, every time we receive a compliment for our garage I think of him and this website.
The main supplies were plywood and screws.
As far as tools, we have been accumulating more and more as the project progressed. I read somewhere that one rule for tools is that you are allow to buy at least one each time you begin a major phase of a project. Sorry I don't make the rules.
Please check the previous parts for detailed supplies or techniques, as the project is progressing, the novelty wears out and the amount of photos taken diminishes. The main thing to keep in mind is to measure many many times before cutting, Familiarize yourself with any of the power tools you're about to use. Recognize signs of fatigue, that is the time when mistakes happen. Take breaks, you want to finish but you also want to look back and see a nice result.
Plan, Measure, and Plan Some More
Measure the area high and low, remember there are no squares walls anywhere, much less in your garage. Just like the previous parts we taped the area first.
Notice the conduit smack in the middle of the one wall. This house is from the 1050's and that is an external wall, there was no way to get the conduit inside the wall, we just had to keep that in the plans and cut notches in the cabinet box to allow for it. That was the price to pay for having outlets handy.
Corner Cabinet?
Making a corner cabinet felt like too many chances to mess things up. Yes, it would've been a great learning experience but this garage is taking so many years. We are old, and want to see it done before one of us die.
This 3 shelves will tie the cabinets from both walls and serve their purpose just as well as a no kidding corner cabinet.
You may notice that one of those corner shelves was the cut out from the counter below. It was used as a template for the other 2 shelves.
Build the Individual Boxes
Start building the boxes, this went so much easier than the bottom cabinets of Part 2. They are made the exact same way. The only difference was that without draws there's no need for all the grooves on the inside of the boxes, just one in the middle (or wherever you may want) for the inside shelf.
You do need grooves for the thin material that will become the sliding doors. Those grooves go on the top and the bottom of the horizontal parts of the box.
After all the boxes are built, they should match the tape from the original design. We took the tape off before remembering to take the photo. But we did check the boxes against the tape and market exactly where the conduit would be.
Time to Hang the Boxes
Same as with the bottom cabinets, the tops one had a 2x4 attached to the wall first.
Finishing Details
The sliding doors were made of 1/4" with shiny white face on one side.
The edges were painted blue to match and that was it!
