Colorful Frozen Ice Balls
It's the simple things in life that make it fun!
My children and I saw this simple idea on Pinterest and we thought we would give it a try. It's simple enough with only 1 item necessary (other items can be used but are all optional). It makes for a fun project with the kids and could even be a winter yard decor item.
You simply fill a water balloon up with water and let it freeze. We live in Vernal, Utah and it has not been above freezing for the past few weeks, so it was the perfect time to try it out.
The addition of color and the different shapes you can see that form in the ice are so beautiful and fun to show the kids.
Supplies
As stated, the only thing you need to successfully make this project is a balloon filled with water and cold weather (or even the freezer lol).
The other optional supplies are:
Food coloring
- we tried with alcohol inks and they weren't potent enough
That's it; that's how simple this project is.
Fill Up Some Balloons
Fill up some balloons (doesn't matter the size) with water and at this point if you want to add color just put a few drops of food coloring in the balloon before you fill it up.
Give the balloons a good shake to mix up the coloring and then get ready to place them outside (or in your freezer).
Let Mother Nature Do Her Job
After a few times trying this out I noticed that it works out better if you flip them balloons a few times to make sure the whole thing freezes.
Otherwise, just leave the balloons outside and let them freeze. You can tell when they are done because as you can see in the picture some expand so much the balloon starts to fall off.
Cut Off the Balloon
Once the water inside the balloons has fully frozen just cut the balloons off the ice underneath and enjoy what you visualize. The spirals, air bubbles, and color blends that you can see that have developed are so cool. The one we liked the most was the black one that looks like a sea urchin inside the ice.
Enjoy!
