Colored Rose Steamed Bread

Chinese steamed bread (Mantou)is a kind of healthy food. They are typically eaten as a staple in northern parts of China.made from wheat flour and yeast, tasted soft and fluffy. It contains low calorie and almost no fat because there is no sugar and no butter in the recipe.
Traditional steamed bread usually looks not very attractive, but there are variety of shapes, look gorgeous but very easy to make.

Ingredients and Equipment

  • 350g Whole-wheat flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 50g Purple sweet potatoes
  • 50g Yellow peas
  • 50g Spinach
  • 6g Dry yeast
  • Steamer
  • Blender
  • Several bowls
  • Plastic wrap
  • Rolling-pin
  • Chopsticks

Preparation of Colors

Wash the purple sweet potatoes, place them in boiling water and cook for 20-25 minutes or until they are soft. Use a strong spoon or potato masher or electric mixer to get them mashed. Do the same with the peas.

For spinach, you need a blender and a cup of water to make some juice.

Make the Dough

First mix the dry ingredients (2g dry yeast for each dough), then add water or spinach juice to make the dough.
Cover the doughs with plastic wrap, place them in a warm place(35℃ will be the best), let them rise for 1~2 hours.
Knead the dough until it's smooth and feels soft.

Make the Roses(Important)

Get 5 small doughs, roll them out, put one on the other.
Plus an extra dough to make the centre of the flower.
roll them up, cut into 2 pieces. Now you done the core step.

By using different colored dough, you can get this.

Steam

Arrange the breads into a steamer, leave about 1” gab in between each one.
Keep the them warm and wet, let they go on rise for 30 mins.
Then steam for 12~15 mins.

Store in airtight container in the refrigerator, re-steam until hot before serving.
