Color-Changing Valentines Day Heart

20210213_133658.jpg

This is a fun Valentine's Day project that is very easy to make. Follow these instructions to learn how!

Supplies

Materials:

  • Battery ×1
  • Breadboard or Perf board ×1
  • Momentary Push Button ×1
  • 16v 1000 µf Capacitor ×1
  • 10K ohm Variable Resistor (optional) ×1
  • 1K ohm Resistor ×2
  • 330 ohm Resistor ×1
  • 2n222 NPN Transistor ×2
  • CON3-254 Touch Sensor ×1
  • RGB LED (The LEDs are separate in the schematic, but they are one RGB LED!)

Tools:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

Assemble Fading Half of Schematic

Thang.jpg

This is the part of the circuit that fades one color. When you press the button, it charges the capacitor, and the LED fades as the capacitor loses energy. You may add a 10K ohm variable resistor between the negative terminal of the capacitor and R2, the 10K ohm resistor. In this example, the blue led fades.

Add Second Half of Schematic

The color you wire this second half to will be the color that stays after the other one fades. You can add a wire connecting the transistor to the color you have not used yet to create a white effect that fades into the two colors that are not fading mixed together.

Make the Heart

Cut out a piece of paper and draw a heart on it. It's that easy. IF you want, you may decorate the heart. Don't use stickers, because where you put the sticker it will not light up.

How to Use and How to Make Different Colors

Here's how to make different Colors:

  • Red(fading) + Blue(staying) = Magenta fading to blue
  • Blue(fading) + Red(staying) = Magenta fading to red
  • Red(fading) + Blue(staying) + Green(staying) = White fading to cyan
  • Green(fading) + Blue(staying) = Cyan fading to blue
  • Blue(fading) + Green(staying) = Cyan fading to green (My personal favorite😊)
  • Green(fading) + Blue(staying) + Red(staying) = White fading to magenta
  • Blue(fading) + Red(staying) + Green(staying) = White fading to yellow
  • Red(fading) + Green(staying) = Yellow fading to green
  • Green(fading) + Red(staying) = Yellow Fading to red

How to use:

  1. Put finger on touch sensor(you must hold this the whole time)
  2. Press button
  3. Put heart in front of RGB LED
  4. Watch as the heart changes colors!

A Story (END)

You may be wondering how I thought of this project. I made this on accident. I was actually making something else as a Valentine's day project, but I got distracted (as one does), and decided to put on a touch sensor to just pass the time while I think. I accidentally press the button while holding the touch sensor, and the led started to light up purple, and fade to red. If you made this project, share down below, and if you have a question, don't be afraid to ask! Also, remember to vote for me in the First Time Authors Contest.
