Color Changing Recessed Lights

Whether you're looking for the ability to make your room any color you'd like, or you just want to be able to dim or change the warmth of the light - these are the perfect solution!

In my particular case, I'll be installing these in my 2yr old's room as I remodel my home room by room. After having these installed for over a year now, they've been even better than we could have imagined and seeing him learn the colors by displaying them in his room has been really cool to see.

These are Alexa enabled too so now that he's coming up to 3yrs old, he's starting to pick his only colors by just telling the smart device.

There's a free website where you can calculate how many lights you'll need and the ideal location of where to place them. Go to https://blog.recessedlighting.com/recessed-lightin... and plug in your information.

This is not my website - just a reference I use every time I install my own lights.

From there I measure from my corner like the website calculator shows and then I place a piece of tape in the general location. With the tape placed, I can then check for ceiling joist and make sure they're out of the way although these wafer thin lights can fit under a joist. It just makes it easier to lift the tabs if they're not directly in the way.

Now that I have my locations, it's time to drill out the hole using the 6 3/8 hole saw and a dust bowl to catch any of the debris that falls. IF you go with a different brand of light, check your hole saw fit around the light before making your hole cuts.

All my holes are cut and the wiring is ready. Just to point out, I will be separating the lights from my ceiling fan since they are on a different switch anyway, but keeping a fan without a light in its place. I'll explain more here later.

I've wired these a few different ways but the fundamentals are all the same so here's the easy way to put it..

Your lights run in a snake or chain like pattern. Your first has the power coming in with a wire going out to the second light. Then the third light. And finally the fourth light has one wire coming in but no wires going out (it's the last light in the chain).

White to white, black to black, and green to copper. Use push in connectors to hold the wire and prevent it from coming out.

In this room I decided to wire them all up together before going into the attic because it's hot. Usually I will have to run wire from hole to hole in the chain like pattern and then wire them up close to the ceiling (this is also a pain in the shoulders after a while). Since I have a lot of attic room above this bedroom - this is the way I went.

Once my entire chain is wired up - it's time to connect it to the power source.

Here's where I'd suggest you consult an electrician if you do not know what you're doing but I'll go into simple terms here.

I shut off the power to the room.

I then uncovered the light switch plate to see if I had a red or black wire going to it (it's red). This means the red goes to my lights in my ceiling fan and the black goes to my fan function.

In the attic I installed a metal junction box near the old wire that ran from the switch to the fan/lights. With the power off - I cut this wire and hooked it up in the junction box, but I spliced off the red to now go to my recessed lights instead of going to the fan lights. Hook up all the neutrals together and grounds together.

Last thing here is to cover the junction box with a metal face plate (not shown).

In the attic I placed each wired junction box next to each hole and now I have the little quick connect wire sticking out.

Back in the bedroom I quick connected each recessed light and swapped out my lighted ceiling fan with just a regular ceiling fan with no light.

With that all done, these lights are ready to go!

They start off with your typical 2700 lumens light which are great, but with the app control I can now set the lights to over a million different colors!

Using Alexa and other smart devices has made these extremely fun and simple to use for both me and my kiddo.

There's also a little dance function where the lights will change to the beat of the music. There's also the option to change each individual light color and make it Christmas themed or anything you want!
