Coat for Clown Costume
This project is a coat for a clown costume I plan on wearing this Halloween. My inspiration for the costume was a music video called "Balada de la trompeta" by RAPHAEL where in the video he dresses as a clown and sings on a stage. There wasn't anywhere to buy the costume so I had to buy a green coat and modify it to look like the one in the music video. I wanted to share my process for anyone else that was interested in making this their Halloween costume.
Supplies
Safety pins, a green trench coat, black string and needle, orange paint, 4 3/4 inch buttons, 2 3/2 inch buttons, 2 packs of 18x21 inch black fabric
Modifying the Collar
I got the coat, measured the collar, outlined the shape and size of the collar with a white collar pencil on the black cloth, and cut it out. I pinned the cut out piece on the collar with safety pins so the piece lined up perfectly with the collar of the coat. I sewed along the outline of the cloth and once I was done I removed the safety pins.
Modifying the Sleeves
I got all 6 buttons and painted them a dark orange. After they finished drying I sewed all 4 small buttons on the outsides of the sleeves where the end of the sleeves meet the wrist. 2 on the left and 2 on the right sides of the sleeves.
Modifying the Back of the Coat
I got the black cloth and cut out 2 15x8 strips of cloth. I pinned the sides together on the longer side of each strip with bobby pins so each strip was folded on itself hotdog style I sewed the edges together, sewed one side closed for each strip, and flipped it inside out. With the side of each strip that was open I folded the end at an angle so the folded end looked like a triangle and sewed it in that shape. I did this for both strips of cloth. I sewed each strip to one side of the coat starting from the triangle side with them crossing over each other in the middle of the back of the coat. In the middle where the 2 strips meet I got one of the big buttons and sewed is there so the 2 strips wouldn't flair around and are kept together.
Modifying the Front of the Coat
I got the last big button and sewed it on the left side an inch under the collar.
