Clothes Rack (no Screws)

Our clothes need a space. It is a reality. And we also need a space. A few years ago I found a way - to hang my clothes on a top side of the opened door. I agree that it is not very elegance but it works! Till we don't need to close the door ;-) So I've decided to make a laconic clothing rack with a basing on a floor - similar as in clothing shops but optimized for materials and a space which I already have. And one thing else - I want to assemble my rack without any screws (perhaps I will get another idea to transform the used materials to another construction) and I want to have ability to move the rack to another place in my flat.

Tools and Materials

Materials:

  • 5 wooden bars (19х29mm, L = 1100mm);
  • plastic (water pipe) tube (D = 64mm, t = 5mm, L = 400mm);
  • silicone tube (D = 30mm, t = 2mm, L = 400mm).

Tools:

  • hacksaw;
  • drill;
  • drill set (3 mm…5mm);
  • files set;
  • needle file;
  • office knife;
  • awl;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • pen;
  • eraser;
  • emery cloth.

Project

The whole geometry is based on wooden bars L=1100mm (which I already have) and size of a clothes (shirts, jackets, trousers, but not a coat). The main thing in my project is a special connector. It is made of plastic (water pipe) tube (D = 64mm, t = 5mm). This material have enough strength to fix both 'legs' and 'crossbeam'.

We need to make two special connectors made of plastic water pipes (D=64mm, t=5mm). My piece of tube has a small bend so you can use straight one. According to a technical drawing each of connectors has a length about 200mm and three throughout holes. Holes has a rectangle shape according to a wooden bars section (29х19mm). To make each hole (rectangle) you can drill a small holes on the perimeter and then cut the borders between them. Be attentive to a rectangle holes size. It must be not a greater than wooden beams section.

Tops and Bottoms

Prepare a short segments of silicone tube for tops (D=30mm, L=170mm, 2 items) and bottoms (D=30mm, L=40mm, 2 items) of rack legs.

To assemble our construction put the 'legs' inside each of two connectors. Then connect two ready 'supports' by the horizontal beam. Next you can cover the tops of 'legs' with a short segments of silicone tube (D=30mm, L=170mm). This action add a strength to construction. Finally put anti-slip elements on each 'leg' using short cuts of silicone tube (D=30mm,L=40mm).

In addition you can paint connectors with appropriate color and put varnish on legs and horizontal beam.

As a new rack is already done we can take off clothing from the door and hang it on a horizontal beam of our construction in any convenient place of your room.
