Climatronic Retrofit Golf MK4/BORA
Hi guys, finally i managed to complete my project of the climatronic swap on my MK4. I want to share with you this madness. I start by saying that this project is very long and difficult process, so if you are not ready or capable to do this job, my advice is, dont do the job.
Im sorry for my bad english
DISCLAIMER: i dont take any responsabilty if you damage your car. The photo there are not all mines, someone i take it from the web only for demostration, because dont was my intection to do a tutorial.
I have a mk4 TDI 110hp but i think that there isnt any difference between petrol and diesel. The difference is between the year of construction of the car. For the car made before 99.5 there is a different wiring because the fan control is different. My car is a 2000 so i follow the guide for +2000 models.
To do this install you should be able with soldering, screwdriver... and this mean that you must have almost the tools.
I spent almost 7 month for study, search for information in old forum and on the web, and for searching all pieces that you need for complete this swap. It took almost 5 days.
Said this we can start
Supplies
GATHER YOUR COMPONENTS:
1.Climatronic box with all servomotors and wiring loom. Pay attention for the climatronic box because there is a 17/12 pin version, and a 10/12 pin version. This guide is for 17/12 pin version.( Check the sponge of the flap, because if it is damaged your heating will not work)
2.Wiring loom, you can take easly from the kufatec. Here the link: https://www.kufatec.com/en/comfort-retrofits/climatronic-cable-set-for-vw-golf-4-bora-33346
3.Climate control panel. You must pay attention to buy the panel that come from a golf MK4 and not from passat 3BG.
4.Sunlight penetretation sensor.
5.Outside temperature sensor.
Take Down the Dashboard
ATTENTION: before to do anything, you must discharge the water of radiator, discharge the AC refrigerant and detach your battery
First thing you have to take down the dashboard. Here i dont show how to dismantling the dash, but you can follow the haynes manual or see a video tutorial on yt. You should have the result as in the picture. I think that this is a one of the longest process.
Prepare the Engine Bay
1. You must remove all mechanism of windshield wiper, for enter into the plenum where you will find a orange connector that we see in the next step.
2.Detach the MAF sensor, and remove air filter box with the tube that go in to the
3.Detach the 2 line of radiator water that go into the car for the heater of car
4.Detach the AC line from the expansion valve.
5.Remove the battery and base where the battery rests, for put your hands easly on the fan control connector.
6.Remove the plastic cover for housing the wiring that come from the interior that goes to the external.
Remove the Old Heater/ventilation
For remove the old box, after detach all line of AC and radiator water, you have to screw off 4 bolts. They are hidden behind the silver heat cover of engine, but there are a small window where you can put your key for screw of it. When you screw off all bolts, from the cockpit you have to pull out, but before you must slack the supporting bar of the dashborad for allow to pull out the H/V box. Remove all air housing.
You should have a result like in the photo.
Wiring
Now start with the wiring with the climatronic harness.
1.In the photo the connector circled in red you must attach with the exisisting loom of your car.
2.in the other 2 photo there are the ufficial kufatec wiring
TIPS: the ground of the box fan you must attach to the A-pillar; in the photos with the layout of relay i circled in blue the WIWA relay.
Test Servomotors and Ventilation
When you have finished of wiring all, you must test before assemble all the stuff. You can test turning on the ignition after temporarily connected the tacho. REMEBER!!!!!!!!!! DONT TURNING ON THE ENGINE.

Assemble Everything
Now, after all test( hope succesfull ) you have to do all reverse. for assembling all. Refill the radiator water and AC refrigerant...... and good luck.
