Click If You Dare! a Bell With a Trap That Can Bite?

Hi all! Ever wondered what’s going to be discussed here? What kind of device this might be?

In short, it’s a device that tests the courage of your friends and guests. And, believe it or not, it’s practical and serves a real purpose!

To start, you’ll need a regular kitchen cutting board. I often use these for DIY projects because they’re affordable, made from hardwood, and easy to find. From this board, I cut out a piece with the necessary dimensions and drill two holes in it.

Using the holes I drilled, I secure the workpiece to the work table of the CNC machine. This approach is simple, effective, and speeds up the process. To be honest, securing workpieces isn’t my favorite part of milling, so I appreciate any way to make it easier!

After that, I install a “corn” cutter, as it’s called among DIY enthusiasts, to proceed with the milling.

I paint the workpiece matte black. But before painting, I apply a layer of primer. I learned long ago that a primer is essential, especially if you’re using spray paint; without it, achieving a smooth, durable finish is nearly impossible.

Using an engraving cutter, I mill a short text onto the board. The text reads “Doorbell”—not in English, as I’m not from an English-speaking country, but in my native language.

Then, I “borrowed” a friend’s toothbrush to remove the fine wood fibers left after milling. Once cleaned, I apply machine oil to the back of the board to protect the wood from moisture and temperature fluctuations.

I install brass bushings into pre-drilled holes. These bushings have a through-hole with M2 threading. A few drops of quick-drying glue secure them well since the device won’t be subject to heavy impacts.

From an aluminum strip, I made two saw-like, toothed parts. I polished them carefully so they look like stainless steel. I engraved a message on each piece: one says, “Are you scared?” and the other, “Think three times.” The idea is to plant a seed of doubt in anyone reading it!

To prepare the parts for bending, I gently heat them with a gas burner. This must be done carefully to avoid melting the metal. Heating makes the metal more pliable for shaping.

I install two springs and a connecting bar to join the two “saw” pieces. The result is a shape that resembles a trap.

Next, I attach this “trap” to the base with screws. I also install a button with a small overlay that reads “Press” to encourage guests to take action. For added effect, I paint the engraved text black to make it stand out.

I solder the leads from the button to the electronic board of a wireless doorbell. Originally, I considered building the electronic bell myself, but I realized it’s cheaper and more efficient to use a ready-made wireless doorbell. I install the battery and secure the back cover with screws.

And that’s it! The “trap” is designed to be mounted on a door in place of a standard doorbell button, while the wireless receiver stays inside. Of course, the trap’s “jaws” don’t actually close; it’s all for show, just to give guests a thrill and test their bravery!
