Clay Mushroom Wall Decor
A simple step by step guide on how to make these cute little mushroom trinket shelves. They are super cute and flexible based on whatever style you want to do!
Supplies
- Sculpey oven bake clay
- Aluminum foil
- Acrylic Paint
- Acrylic Resin
- Mounting Tape
- Wooden dowel
Sculp Bases
To sculpt your bases, use aluminum foil to shape the center. This will make your mushrooms much lighter and easier to mount. Cover the aluminum foil in clay. I made a dish shape for the mushroom cap and I made a curved stalk for it.
Detail the Cap
I detailed the mushroom caps by doing a pinched wrinkled edge, and used a plastic tool to carve out the little gills. For the spots of the mushroom, I gently pressed different shapes and sizes of clay balls onto the top.
Detail the Stalk
I added the skirt to the top of the stalk with thin pinched sheets of clay. Let the skirt connect in a few spots to make it look more rippled. At this point, you will bake the stalk and cap for the recommended time on your clay.
Attach Stalks to Caps
Drill a small hole in the bottom of the cap and top of your stalk. Insert a wooden skewer to act as a support for the mushroom. Fill the seam with clay, and use a plastic tool to blend the clay into your gills and smooth it into the stalk. Bake the mushrooms again.
Paint!
Paint your mushrooms however you desire! I chose orange and green to match my mother’s bathroom. I used tan for the gills and stalk and stained it with yellow watercolor for contrast.
Coat With Resin
Cover your mushrooms with acrylic resin and let cure. Make sure you leave the base of your mushroom smooth or you will need to sand it. It must be smooth to mount.
Mount
The mushrooms should be light enough to attach with a good mounting tape. You’re all done!
