I used an ordinary cigar box and some scrap wood to make a false bottom for hidden storage.

  • Empty Cigar Box. (Any box would work)
  • 1 Thin Wood Sheet.(Same length & width of box or larger)
  • 2 Strips of Wood. [1/16”x 1/2”x ?](At least 2 times longer than the box)
  • Some Cheap Pencils or Wood Scrap. (These will get broken)
  • Hacksaw or Dremel. (Unless wood pre cut)
  • Ruler or Tape Measure. (Unless wood is precut)
  • Glue or Double Sided Tape.(Optional)
  • File or Sandpaper. (Optional)
  • 2 Spring Clamps. (Optional)

Using the thin sheet of wood, needs to end up almost exactly the same size as the inside perimeter of the box. I lined my corners inside the box corners and just marked them with a pencil.

I went back a used the ruler to make sure they were straight, used the spring clamps to hold the ruler steady. Cut on the lines either with dremel or hacksaw.
Then I filed the edges to make them smooth, after filing it fit perfectly.

Create the Space for Your Stash

This is where the pencils come in. If you don’t secure them they rattle so glue or double sided tape is recommended. They support your bottom while creating some space for your items to hide. Glue them around the edges and one somewhere toward the middle. Other items can be used if you need a bigger space. Just try to keep it level so your false bottom won’t be noticed.

After the glue dries, slide the false bottom in on top of the pencils.
You could hide your stash under there now if you don't want to repeat some of these steps over again later. Doesn’t make much difference either way.

Make the Baseboards

Cut the strips so they will fit perfectly inside the perimeter of the box. Angle the ends so they can fit together easily when inserted. I filed the edges here also to exaggerate the angle. The photographs will help explain this step better. These create a disguise for your bottom hiding visible edges.

If you didn’t hide your goods already, pull out the baseboards and flip up the bottom. Slide in your thin treasures. Reassemble and if you did everything right you can’t even tell you have a compartment in there. Since this Instructable is cigar aficionado inspired i will put the “good” cigars down there and the normal ones up top.
