Chutes and Ladders
We made Chutes and Ladders. Chutes and Ladders is a board game where you roll a die to determine the number of spaces forward you move to try to get to the top of the board. However, there are different obstacles to pass through on the way. If you land on a chute you slide down to a lower space and if you land on a ladder you climb up to the top. We wanted to create a game that would be fun and that a lot of people were familiar with. We created the board with the laser cutter and the pieces with the 3D Printer. This took many steps to achieve
Supplies
- Chromebook to use for the Onshape software
- Color filament for 3D Printer
- Super glue
- 1/10 in. thick plywood
- 3D printer
- Laser cutter
Create Board and Pieces in Onshape
You will need to open Onshape and design a correctly sized board and chutes/ladders. We made an 8.5 x 8.5 in. board with 2 in. long chutes and 3 in. long ladders. Once you create the correct size board you can create the chutes and ladders based on the size of the board. You will need to create lines on the board to indicate the square spaces while also creating holes on each line intersection for the chutes and ladders to fit in. You will need to make sure the legs on the chutes and ladders can fit into the holes on the board.
Put the Pieces Into the 3D Print Software and Print
You will need to export the file into the Prusa Slicer. Once you export into the Prusa Slicer you need to insert your design, organize it, and make sure it is oriented correctly. Then you can change the settings to fit what you need for the size and shape. Then you slice it to determine how long it will take to print and export the G code onto a drive to be used for the 3D printer. Then you select your project, decide the correct filament color, and start the print.
Put the Board in the Laser Software and Create
First you need to export the file onto the laser cut software. You will need to orient it correctly and make sure that the correct areas are selected to either cut all the way through or burn a line. After selecting everything to your preference you can preview the product to make sure it is correct before cutting.
Assemble the Chutes and Ladders
You will need to check and make sure that the legs fit into the holes on the board before gluing everything together. You can then glue together the legs onto the chutes and ladders. Make sure to allow enough time to dry before actually using them in the game. Double check that after the glue has dried they still fit into the board. Now you are ready to play.
Put the Game Together and Play
To play is like normal game of chutes and ladders. You can put the chutes and ladders wherever you want and even change the location each game. Beginning in the bottom left corner, roll a die to determine how many spaces forward to move. Follow the path left and right all the way to the top left corner. If you land on the top of a chute you must go down to the bottom of it. If you land on the bottom of the ladder you must go to the top of it. Nothing happens at the bottom of a chute or the top of the ladder. The player that reaches the top left corner first is the winner.
