Christmas Ornaments
Cold -> Winter -> Christmas!!! That's what each one of us easily relates to. We've just had our Christmas holidays and celebrations. but this wonderful idea is making way into this year's ornaments list.
Join me in making these attractive handmade felt ornaments.
Supplies
1) 12 inches x 6 inches red felt cloth
2) 12 inches x 6 inches white felt cloth
3) 6 ft long red yarn
4) 6 ft long white yarn
5) Black pen
6) Yarn needle
7) Scissors
8) Lights for decoration (optional)
Cut the Felt Cloth
In this step, I cut two 5 inches x 5 inches squares of white and red felt cloth.
Draw the Designs on the White Felt Squares
In this step, I took one of the white felt squares and drew two lines perpendicular to each other. Then added two more lines at 45 degrees to these lines. That completed the base lines as shown in the image 3.
Draw the Designs on the Red Felt Squares
Using the same steps as above, I marked the designs on both the red felt squares.
Step-by-Step Feather Stitch
'Feather' or 'Fly' stitch is a commonly used stitch for stems or grass on the embroidery cloth. The steps are clearly laid down as a, b, c, d (hold the thread under the needle at 'b') and then insert again at 'b' or 'e'. If you still need help on this there are plenty of videos and tutorials online.
Stitching the Design With Red Yarn on the White Felt Square
I have used 'Feather' or 'Fly' stitch in this step with the detailed steps shown in the previous step. and completed one line of the red yarn on the design. Then, I completed the yarn which is at 90 degrees to this yarn. Later, completed the third and then the fourth. One cross is completed using this red yarn on one of the white felt squares. Repeated the same on the second white felt square. You can see that both these are completed with the red yarn work on the designs.
Stitching the Design With Green Yarn on the White Felt Square
Then, I continued to stitch the green yarn on the first white felt cloth by picking one line at a time and continued for all the four lines. Repeated these steps on the second square as well. I've also shown the reverse of the stitches.
Stitching the Design With Green Yarn on the Red Felt Square
In this step I repeated the feather stitches on the red felt cloth with the green yarn. Repeated these on both the red felt squares.
Stitching the Design With White Yarn on the Red Felt Square
With the green yarn in place, I then added the white yarn stitches to both the red felt squares. By this time, all the four squares are completed with all the designs stitched in red, white and green colors.
Checking the Squares Are Design Ready
At this stage, I confirmed that the all the 4 squares are ready with the designed well done and as accurately as possible.
Trimming the Squares Into Octagons
I cut the corners of the squares as I had planned to make octagons as the final shape.
Stitching the White Ornament
As I put together both the white felt cloth, I used the red yarn to make a blanket stitch on the seven sides of the ornament. Again you may search for 'blanket stitch' videos or tutorials on the internet.
Stuffing the White Ornament
I have left one side open to stuff in small white felt pieces. Made it uniform and the levelled it up carefully. Then, finally stitched the eighth side as well.
Stitching the Red Ornament
In this step, I used blanket stitch with the white yarn to keep together both the felt cloths and stitched seven sides of the red ornament.
Stuffing the Red Ornament
With one side still open for stuffing the red felt pieces, I stuffed these small leftover red felt pieces uniformly and carefully across the red ornament.
Finished the Ornaments
I checked for evenness on both the sides of the ornament and then adding a red yarn for hanging to the white ornament and white yarn to the red ornament.
This, has turned out to be one of my favorite projects so far. I fell in love with this one. It has exceeded my expectations and is much more festive and attractive then I'd imagined.
I hope you loved my new creative project.
Congratulations! Just as me you've made it!
