Chocolate Planet Earth
Chocolate Earth is a original sweet not only for kids and an ideal Planet Earth Day dessert! If your kids are at least a little bit fans of the universe and interested in planets AND chocolate, make them this chocolate planet filled with edible rocks.
Supplies
For three planets:
- silicone mold for 6 half balls
- 120 g/4.2 oz of white chocolate
- food colorant in gel: blue, green, yellow
- edible rocks – buy them or make them with this tutorial
- 4 small bowls
- silicone spatula
- 3 toothpicks
- plat brush
- ceramic plate
Prepare Chocolate
- Set 40 g/1.4 oz of white chocolate aside for later and let’s work with the rest. Temper the chocolate – melt half of it in water bath or the microwave, put away from heat and then stir in the other half of the chocolate chopped into pieces. Let it melt while stirring constantly. Tempered chocolate will give the planet shiny surface and nice crisp. Split the tempered chocolate into 4 small bowls (I mixed two colors in one so I have only three bowls) – just a little for white and yellow, more for green and the biggest amount for blue (about half of the tempered chocolate). Add colorant to the chocolate. Don’t add too much or it will make the chocolate solid or even lumpy. What we want is chocolate that’s still liquid or at least smearable with brush.
- Pick up a little white chocolate on a toothpick and kind of splash it into the mold. Then use the toothpick to smear it just a little. This will be the white clouds over the planet.
- Next add yellow for the dry parts of the continents. Add them in larger chunks and smear a little.
- Green is also for the continents so add it and smear to create larger green areas. After this place the mold in the freezer for several minutes so the chocolate hardens fast.
- Then use the brush to cover everything in blue chocolate which will be the rest of the planet – water. Make sure you smear the chocolate properly over the previous layers to prevent holes and also make sure to put enough around the edges. The chocolate tends to obey gravity and move back to the center of the mold, making the edges too thin and the center too thick.
- Wipe off any chocolate around the edges and put the mold back in the freezer.
- Temper the leftover white chocolate and paint each mold with it. Try to even out the inside of each half ball and make sure you paint also the sides (just like before, don’t let the chocolate go down to the center. And once more into the fridge with it!
Assemble Planets
- Take the half planets out of the mold carefully.
- Fill three of them with edible rocks.
- Heat up a ceramic plate in the microwave and put each of the halves without rocks on it for several seconds. The edges will start to melt.
- Place a half with melted edges on a half with rocks and hold for a few seconds. The chocolate will solidify fast and the platen will be sealed.
Storing and Serving
The Planet needs cold so store it in the fridge or the freezer. Serve it in any way you like – just like it is, with ice cream or fruit. When you open the planet, it will reveal its sweet secret.
