Tank tops are a staple in many kids' summer wardrobes! So skip the trip to the store and make some yourself! I used fabric I had purchased, but you can use many things, from Jersey bed sheets, to adult tees that don't get the love they used to get!

Supplies

Fabric

Pattern (I used the Slope Tank from Greenstyle Creations. It's a FREE PDF pattern you can print at home!)

Sewing machine or serger

Coordinating thread (preferably polyester, so it has some stretch)

Scissors, OR rotary cutter and mat

Pins or Clips (optional)

Iron and ironing board

Cut Your Fabric

Cut your fabric according to pattern instructions. If you're using the free Slope Tank pattern, you are going to cut 1 FRONT on the fold, 1 BACK on the fold, 1 NECKBAND and 2 ARMBANDS.

Sew Together

Lay your front and back fabric pieces right (pretty) sides together. Using your serger or a stretch stitch on your sewing machine, sew sides and shoulders together, as seen in the picture.

Sew Your Bands

Lining up the short sides on each of your bands, right sides together, sew using your serger or a stretch stitch on your sewing machine. You should now have 3 circle pieces, as seen here.

Attaching Your Neckband

Take your neckband circle, and fold it in half, hot dog style, so the seam you sewed is on the INSIDE.

Quarter your fabric. Do this by folding it in half, marking the ends with a pin or clip, then match up the clips in the center, and marking the new "ends" with pins or clips (see the second picture). Do this for your neck line as well- Match up your shoulder seams so you find the front center and back center of your tank top, then match the front and back centers to find the quarter marks near the shoulder seams (see third picture).

Now pin or clip neckband to neckline, right sides together, matching up your pins or clips (picture four). Sew or serge together, stretching nackBAND to the same size as neckLINE (do not stretch the main shirt).

Attaching Armbands

Press the bottom edge of your tank top up 1/2" toward the wrong side. Using a zig zag or stretch stitch on your sewing machine, sew your hem.

Admire Your Work
