I’ve loved the Chick-Fil-A fried chicken sandwich ever since I first tasted it. Sadly, I live in Mexico, meaning that I haven’t had a bite of the sandwich since last December. I also can’t cross the border since it’s closed due to the pandemic.

Due to these conditions, I tried to replicate the sandwich by watching a YouTube tutorial and using the recipe in the video. My first try at making the sandwich was during the summer, and it came out good, but not delicious. Then, school started and we were assigned to make an instructable project. I found the sandwich contest and decided to give the chicken sandwich another shot.

The end result was exquisitely delicious.

In this instructable, you’ll be able to get a close look at the process to make a fantastic fried chicken sandwich that tastes very similar to the one at Chick-Fil-A.

Gather Your Supplies

Tools required:

1 Refrigerator

1 Stovetop

1 Pan/Pot for frying (Preferably with a height of 4-5 inches)

1 flat pan

2 Large bowls

1 Small bowl

1 Ziploc bag

1 Measuring cup

1 Cooling Rack

1 Whisk

1 Wooden Spoon or Thermometer

1 kitchen tong

Multiple Spoons for measuring teaspoons, tablespoons, and cups

Ingredients required:

Marination process:

1 chicken breast, halved

1/4 cup of pickle juice

2 tablespoons of water

Wet mixture for the breading station:

1/2 cup of milk

1 large egg

Dry mixture for the breading station:

1 cup of All-purpose Flour

3 Tbsp of Powdered Sugar

1/2 tsp of Paprika

1 tsp freshly of ground Black Pepper

1/2 tsp of Chili Powder

1/2 tsp of Salt

1/2 tsp of Baking Powder

Chick-Fil-A sauce:

1/2 cup of Mayonnaise

1 tsp of Dijon Mustard

3 tsp of Yellow Mustard

2 tsp of BBQ Sauce

2 Tbsp of Honey

1/2 tsp of Garlic Powder

1/2 tsp of Paprika

1 tsp of Lemon Juice

Frying:

Oil for frying (900 ml if using a frying pan/pot 4-5 inches tall)

Presentation station:

1 brioche hamburger bun

2 thin slices of butter

1 slice of lettuce

2 slices of tomato

1 slice of American cheese or mozzarella cheese

Marinate the Chicken

Make sure that the chicken breast you have at home is thin so that it’s able to cook well and it doesn’t take too long to cook in the oil.

After that, use your measuring cup and pour ¼ cup of pickle juice. Then, place the pickle juice inside a medium or large Ziploc bag. Place the 2 tablespoons of water into the Ziploc bag as well. Insert the chicken into the Ziploc bag, tightly seal the bag and place it into the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Make Chick-Fil-A Sauce

Grab your small bowl and pour the quantities mentioned in the supplies section for Chick-Fil-A sauce (1/2 cup of Mayonnaise, 1 tsp of Dijon Mustard, 3 tsp of Yellow Mustard, 2 tsp of BBQ Sauce, 2 Tbsp of Honey, 1/2 tsp of Garlic Powder, 1/2 tsp of Paprika, 1 tsp of Lemon Juice). Be sure to use measuring spoons and cups in order to get a delicious sauce.

After pouring all the ingredients, whisk the contents in the bowl for about 30 seconds, until the mix has a yellow and orange color.

Refrigerate until you’re ready to create the final product, which is one of the last steps in this instructable.

Breading Station

In 1 of the large bowls, combine egg and milk to form a wet batter. Crack the egg open and pour its contents into the bowl. Then, pour the milk into the mix and use the whisk in order to combine the ingredients and have the wet batter ready.

In the other large bowl, combine the dry ingredients included in the supplies section (Dry mixture for breading). After adding all the ingredients, use a whisk in order to successfully bind the ingredients together. With that, your breading station is ready.

Breading the Chicken

After the 30 minutes have passed, take the chicken out of the fridge and the Ziploc bag, onto the cooling rack. When you’re ready, dip the entire piece of chicken into the wet batter, then dip it into the dry ingredients, making sure the breading covers most of the chicken.

After doing so, dip the chicken into the wet batter once again and into the dry ingredients, trying to get enough breading into the piece. Basically, you have to double-dip in each bowl. This will help the chicken be fried well and crispy.

Once you’re done with the breading, place the breaded chicken on top of the cooling rack.

Heating the Oil

Take out your pan/pot and fill it up with the 900 ml of oil. Then, make sure to light up the stovetop and keep the heat at a medium-high temperature. If you’re able to measure the temperature with a thermometer, make sure the oil is at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don’t have a thermometer, use a wooden spoon in order to track the temperature of the oil. It takes about 7-10 minutes to heat up. You can do this step before beginning the breading process if you want to go as quickly as possible.

Ready to Fry

Once the oil is at the right temperature, use a kitchen tong to grab the piece of chicken and drop it into the oil. The oil should start to bubble aggressively, so be careful not to burn yourself when being close to the pan/pot. It should take about 5-8 minutes to fry if the piece of chicken is thin. Be on the lookout for the color of the chicken, as it serves as a reference to know if the chicken is ready.

Once the chicken has a golden brown color on the outside and the 5-8 minute timer has gone by, use the kitchen tong to grab the chicken and transport it to the cooling rack. Once it’s in the cooling rack, add the slice of cheese on top of the chicken. It will start to melt naturally due to the heat of the chicken.

Putting It Together

Have your tomato, lettuce, brioche buns, butter, and Chick-Fil-A sauce ready. Once you’re ready, place a flat pan on the kitchen stove and heat it up at a medium temperature. Meanwhile, place one thin slice on each side of the brioche bun. When the pan is hot enough, place each bun on the pan, with the side of the bun you buttered facing downwards. Let it sit for 3 minutes and place them on the plate after the bun has a nice golden look.

With the bun on the plate, put some of the Chick-Fil-A sauce on the bottom bun, using a desired amount of sauce on top of the bun. Place the two slices of tomato on the top bun, and the lettuce on top of the tomato.

When the chicken is cool, place it on top of the bottom bun, which has the Chick-Fil-A sauce, and then make it into a sandwich by placing the top bun on top of the chicken.

Enjoy!
