Chess Game Cookie Style (vegan)

Supplies
As you will be making two doughs - one in white and one in black - you will need the following ingredients twice!
- 300 g flour
- 200 g vegan margarine
- 100 g powdered sugar (regular sugar can also be used)
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar (optional)
- A quarter teaspoon of salt (about 2 g)
- 25 g cocoa powder - just once

- 100 g icing sugar (for connecting the figures to the base plates later)

Printing Cookie Cutters
Option 1)
CAD Models of cookie cutters of chess figures can be found in many variations in the internet. Some are for free, some might cost a few dollars. For this project, I chose these models and then printed them with my 3D printer.
Option 2)
If you prefer to avoid any 3D printing, you can search commertially available ones e.g. on amazon.
Preparing the Dough
- Take two bowls and in each of them mix:
- 300 g flour
- 100 g powdered sugar
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- A pinch of salt
- (25 g cocoa powder) <-- just in one of them to get it dark
- Add 200 g margarine to the bowl and knead everything together
- Form the dough into a ball and wrap it in cling film
- Place it in the refrigerator for 1 hour
-- note that this dough is optimized to not rise while baking so that the figures keep their forms
Making the Figures
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (top and bottom heat)
- Sprinkle a bit of flour on the work surface
- Roll out the chilled dough to a thickness of about 5 mm
- Cut out cookies and place them on a baking sheet
- Cut out round support plates for the figures and add them to the baking sheet
- 16 pieces of each color
- Here I used a shot glass. Alternatives could be an espresso cup or another round cookie cutter
- Bake in the preheated oven at 170°C (top and bottom heat) for 12 minutes

- Let the figures and support circles dry for 2 h
- Prepare some sugar icing (100 g icing sugar + 1 - 2 table spoons water)
- Put each figure on a base plate and connect them by using the sugar icing
- Let the icing dry for another 2 h
Making the Board
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (top and bottom heat).
- Form the dough to a cuboid whith a front surface in the size that you want the sqares on the board to be
- Cut the cuboid in 32 pieces each like shown in the pictures
- Lay the squares on the baking sheet one by one and connect them by squishing and pushing carefully
- Bake in the preheated oven at 170°C (top and bottom heat) for 15 - 20 minutes
- Right after getting the cookie board out of the oven, pat on in while it is still soft in order to create an exceptionally flat surface. You can also roll over it with a rolling pin or a bottle
Tips and Tricks
- The crown of the king of the models that I used, was rather fragile and broke off during the process. I replaced the crown with a w of a sugar alphabet that I luckily had laying around
- When sending the CAD files to the printer, make sure to adjust the size first if necessary. I reduced my models down to 30 % of the original size
- Support the figures while the sugar icing is drying with forks and spoons
