Hello There.
today we are going to make a Cheese Chess

For our Chess we will need a lot of Cheese.
in addition to other companions that will delight our guests.
Here are the main ingredients:

  • 4 X 400 grams Cheese blocks
  • 5 X 300 grams of Guava Paste bar (also known as Bocadillo)
  • 500 grams of mixed grapes (in this case I chose green and purple Chilean grapes)
  • 500 grams of sliced ham

And the materials:

  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Toothpick box
  • Gold metallic paper, or whatever you prefer
  • A thick sheet of polystyrene (at least 2 centimeters in gauge)
  • Wooden tray (I'll use a square one, but you can use whatever you have)
  • Glue gun

Chess is a mind sport played on an 8 × 8 squared board
This board consists of 64 squares of which half are light and the other half dark.

For this instructable we will have to prepare
32 Cheese boxes to make the light ones and 32 Guava paste boxes for the dark ones.

Normally, in Chess, the dark color is used on the wood to mark the dark squares
and leave the wood color as the light squares, but on this occasion we want our chess board
to be completely edible, we will use the Cheese and Guava paste as a base.

We will use the front measurement of the square Guava bar as a guide for our boxes (as well as the light ones as well as the dark ones). We will cut carefully, if you want you can help with another cutting board to make the most exact cuts.

After carrying out this process and having our 32 dark boxes, we will proceed to do the same with the Cheese, which in this case will be the Light boxes.

We use the measurements of the guava paste as a guide for our squares, and we will have to cut the block of Cheese based on these measurements.

The Crowd.

To avoid hunger and cravings while we play, we will make some small snacks to calm anxiety
while we develop our Chess game, we will call these snacks: The Crowd, the public that comes to see
an epic meeting of edible Chess. And as a public we will make them look like little people
watching the show, but how will we do this?

for that we will use the Toothpicks, the Cheese, the Ham and the Grapes.

First we will cut a lot of rectangular small Cheese bars.
after having cut them we will put them aside on another plate.

* Do not forget that each thing we cut will have to be distributed in different plates
until the final assembly is made. this in order to avoid staining from the other foods in the cheese.

After cutting the Cheeses, we will take the Ham and make strips of it, as I explain in the images,
equally cutting the ham from one side to the other in parallel until forming several cuts
These strips will be threaded on a toothpick in a singular way like forming an S simulating a small scarf.

And finally to close our little people with a flourish, we will place a grape on Toothpick top simulating a head,
I recommend alternating between the colors of the grapes. to give more harmony to our Cheese Chess

The Mini People.

After that, you will get a large group of "miniature people"

same as the images.

Don't worry, this crowd of little people will not be affected by the pandemic.

Grapes work like a space helmet with a protective field.
just kidding. take care of yourself and yours.

The Tray.

Now we will take the measurements of the wooden tray and we will cut the polystyrene sheet
to the exact measurement of the tray space, so that it fits perfectly, then we will cover the polystyrene
with the metallic gold paper and insert it to the tray, we will make some ornaments to make it look very elegant for the occasion. Remember that Chess is not only a game of concentration and intelligence but also of class and elegance.

For the ornaments we will cut a horizontal strip and we will make small folds
in the shape of a valley and a mountain simulating an accordion,
which we will then glue to the edge of our tray, with the glue gun.

Our Cheese Chess is already taking on the appearance of a coliseum
where a tournament of international stature is taking place.

The Pieces

quesos 34.jpg
quesos 49.jpg
quesos 50.jpg

Chess is a game between two opponents in which each one has at the beginning 16 moving pieces that are placed on a board divided into 64 squares.

We have already made the parts for our battlefield (the board) now we have to make the pieces
with which we will play.

Every piece is valuable and you can't win a game without pieces to checkmate. Each player starts with sixteen pieces, and each piece has its name and its own moves, which are:

a King, a Queen, two Bishops, two Knights, two Rooks, and eight Pawns.

This is a strategy game and your objective is to checkmate the opponent's King.
so now it is the turn to make the 32 pieces, 16 light and 16 dark.

I made some sketches of the Chess pieces preserving the essence of each piece, I tried to keep these designs as simple as possible to be able to reproduce them in the simplest way in the Cheese and the Guava Paste,
if you want you can guide yourself with my sketched designs,
and you will not have problems when playing.

cut all the pieces, both the Cheese (Light) and the Guava Paste (Dark) and insert a toothpick in the middle, which will serve to balance it on the board

please check the next step pictures to understand the final Cheese Chess Pieces

For the Rook we will cut a large cube of Cheese and we will make diagonal cuts in the upper central part
as I explain in the images.

the Bishops will be only triangular bases that we will also use in all body pieces.

And for the King, the Queen, the Knight and the Pawns, we will use two pieces that will be joined thanks to the toothpick, forming the head and the body.

the toothpick will also help us to move the pieces around the battlefield

TIP:

Remember to always wash your hands during the creation process of our chess
and before playing it with your battle partner.

Decoration

quesos 54.jpg

Well, the time has come to assemble all the parts of our Cheese Chess
on the tray that we already have prepared

But we still need to mount the lateral Decorations, for this we will take the "accordions" that we prepare
with the gold paper, first we will join them in one of their base forming a triangle like a hand fan,
and after this we will proceed to glue them by the tip, on the side of our tray with the help of the glue gun.

with the tray ready we will continue with the other parts and ingredients.

Assembly

TableroPiezasInicioWeb-1.jpg

Having all our ingredients prepared and ready, we only have to make the respective assembly
on our prepared tray, we will place the squares on the tray in order of dark, light, and alternating them
so on until generating a well distributed floor of boxes like the table of a chess.

Remember that on the right edge of the board where the player's front is There is always a white square left and the Queen always goes in the square of her team color.
The queen of cheese goes in the light box. and the queen of Guava paste goes in a dark box.

Now we will place our chess pieces in their respective places. As indicated in the graphic.

when we finish assembling our game pieces, We will assemble our public of
mini Cheese ham and grape people.

Enjoy Your Cheese Chess

Final4.jpg

It is time to enjoy a good game of Cheese Chess and a feast of flavor.
The good thing about this Chess is that when you capture a piece,
not only do you capture it, actually you can eat it.

I recommend combining the Cheese with the Guava Paste, the flavor of these combined is a dish of Gods.

And if you finish the game and want to play again, you just have to run to the kitchen to make more pieces.

have fun!

Good game and bon appetit.

The End
