Cheapest Easiest French Toast Ever
"breakfast for dinner" for two, for under $5. Quick and easy. Tastey and filling. Stupid simple.
Supplies
Cheap Eggs (can substitute liquid eggs, or egg whites, but "vegan eggs" don't really work here) Cheapest Panettone you can find (normal vs chocolate chip, according to availability and taste). Jewel was closing out these minis for less than $0.30. Often the larger ones are in the $1.00-$3.00 range, so more cost effective and just as tastey, but not as much fun. Please note, the Panettone and eggs can both last weeks, possibly even months, when stored properly, so time is on your side.
Prep the Panettone
These mini panettone makes for simple three-slice Toast. If your discount loaf is the large variety, I slice it top to bottom instead. Makes for a nicer slice.
Blend Your Eggs
Right around 1 egg per mini loaf. More if you like your toast eggy, fewer if you add milk/water. Just give it a good mix with a fork, and it's good.
Soak the Bread
Slap the slices into the eggs, and let it soak for about 30 seconds. Flip and soak for another 30 seconds. up to around 2 min won't hurt any, but the finished produce will be more eggy in taste a more will soak in.
Fry and Flip
On medium heat (6 out of 10 on my induction stove. about 50% on a gas top) melt a touch of butter or bacon grease. In a pinch olive oil (avacado and vegtable will add an off flavor, so avoid for this recipie). Pop in the soaked slice and let it cook for about 2 min (3 with the lid on, if you need "fully cooked egg" for someone that rects to wet cooked eggs. rare, but they exsist)
Serve
When both sides have this nice looking cooked/brown color, you're ready to serve. They work as-is for finger food when cooled 2-3 min.
Add silverware, butter and syrup for normal "french toast" with a twist. If you want to get fancy, a nice marscapone or ricotta spread with a drizzle of honey will do the trick. Could even add cheese and sliced Kiełbasa szynkowa or bacon to make a breakfast sandwich of sorts. The salty ham goes nicely with the sweet of the bread.
