Step 1: Research and Planning

The first step is to research the costume from the movie. Look for shapes that you can simplify. Once you have an idea of the shapes you want for the fingers draw those onto poster board and cut them out.

Step 2: Building the Scissor Fingers

You will want to cut out two of each shape to make them stronger. You are going to glue popsicle sticks between the two pieces of poster board to make them stronger. I used large and small popsicle sticks. For some of the fingers I added popsicle sticks to the end so that I could attach scissor handles later. Not pictured: I added bits of poster board to the ends of some of the scissor fingers so that I could stick my own fingers inside. Make these a little larger because you will be attaching them to a glove.

Step 3: Painting

Next its time to start making these babies look real!

I first painted all of them black and then spray painted them silver.

Step 4: Details

These scissorhands are all about the details. I sculpted my scissor handles and a ton of screws out of model magic. This is a great cheap way to add details. Not pictured: You can also start making ovals that will be used as belt buckles for your legs later on.

Step 5: Assembly

After my scissor fingers dried I began attaching them to gloves. I just had cheap old gloves at my house that I used. I put the gloves on and started figuring out where to attach each of the scissor pieces. I used hot glue to attach the pieces to the glove so be careful not to burn yourself. Some pieces are around the fingers of the gloves and some are just glued between or on top of the glove fingers. At this point I also glued on the scissor handles and "screws." I glued some scrap of fabric to the back of the hands and added "screws" to that as well. This is just another added detail to make the final product look polished. I then covered the newly attached pieces with Mod Podge for added reinforcement.

Step 6: Painting Details

I painted the scissor handles and "screws" black first. Then I painted the parts I wanted to look like metal with silver paint. Some handles were painted red. I also added in gold and black paint to give an aged and rusted look to some of the fingers.

Step 7: Costume

I went to goodwill and bought a couple of old belts. I painted the buckles gold and added gold painted details. For the belts on the legs I used scraps of black fabric and glued on model magic belt buckles that I had painted gold. Look at pictures of Edward Scissorhands or watch the movie over and over again to figure out where to place these details.

Step 8: Hair and Makeup

The hair and make up complete this look. To make the scars I used a glue stick and a popsicle stick to apply the scars to my face. I also covered my eyebrows with the glue stick because Edward doesn't have any. I put a very light foundation on to cover the scars and then gave my eyes a sad sunken in look with layers of gray and brown eye shadow. I also added eye shadow under the scars for an extra pop. For the hair I just used an old mangled wig I had and teased it and hair sprayed it.

Step 9: Put It All Together!!!!
